MATTHEW UPTON NAMED ACTING DIRECTOR OF TECHNOLOGY COMMERCIALIZATION | |
UK Innovate is pleased to announce that Matthew Upton has been appointed Acting Director of Technology Commercialization.
Matthew Upton, a licensed patent attorney, has been an integral part of the University of Kentucky's (UK) innovation ecosystem, previously serving as the Senior Associate Director of Intellectual Property Development for almost five years. In that position, he worked with UK innovators to identify, analyze and protect innovations developed at UK.
He began his career with Standley Law Group LLP and later became a partner at Barney DeBrosse, LLC, where he specialized in patent preparation and prosecution, patent litigation and innovation commercialization. Upton also served as patent counsel for Wacker Chemical Corporation, where he managed patent portfolios and supported innovation initiatives.
In his new role, Upton will oversee a team managing the University's intellectual property, licensing and startup portfolios.

UK INNOVATE SUPPORTS TWO MAJOR GRANTS TO ADVANCE CAREER READINESS AND TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT | |
UK Innovate is excited to announce its involvement in two newly awarded grants aimed at enhancing student career readiness and advancing cutting-edge technology.
UK IMPACT Grant: Awarded $85,500, this grant aims to enhance UK undergraduate student career readiness by incorporating "Work Integrated Learning" into the sustainability curriculum through partnerships with the Gatton College of Business & Economics and the Pigman College of Engineering. UK Innovate’s Kim Sayre, Innovation Connect Manager, will identify and build new sustainability partnerships in both colleges.
NSF PFI TT Grant: Awarded $500,000, this NSF Partnerships for Innovation - Technology Translation (PFI-TT) grant focuses on developing an edge device for vibration monitoring, coupled with a machine learning-based data processing pipeline for machine condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. UK Innovate's Liz Knapp, Commercialization Manager, and Kim Sayre are supporting Peng “Edward” Wang, formerly Assistant Professor at Pigman College of Engineering, as technical staff on this initiative.

UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY INNOVATOR JOINS XLERATOR NETWORK'S I-RED COHORT | |
Brittany Levy, MD, from the College of Medicine at the University of Kentucky, has been selected as a participant in the XLerator Network Southeast IDeA Regional Entrepreneurship Development (I-RED) second cohort. Dr. Levy, the Founder of TalkiTourni, LLC, created an automated emergency tourniquet device aimed at improving the rates of adequately applied tourniquets outside of the hospital setting.
XLerateHealth (XLH), in partnership with UK Innovate, selected eight leading innovators from the Southeast IDeA State region to join this NIH-funded program. This rigorous selection process underscores Dr. Levy's potential to advance healthcare technologies.

UK VISITS BOEHRINGER INGELHEIM HEADQUARTERS
On July 24, UK Innovate's Chelsea Ex-Lubeskie, Innovation Connect Manager, and Dr. Terry Hinds, Associate Professor at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, visited Boehringer Ingelheim's headquarters in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Dr. Hinds had the opportunity to discuss his research expertise and active projects that align with Boehringer’s key research areas.
This visit stemmed from our Science Day in April, where UK Innovate hosted four Boehringer executives to meet with UK faculty, including Dr. Hinds, to explore research and collaboration opportunities.
