Plum Creek Christian Church

VOLUME 44 . ISSUE 5 . MAY 2019
We all know what it’s like to be concerned about important relationships in your life. People are complicated and life gets messy. So how do you build and maintain a healthy relationship with your spouse, your children, your friends, or yourself? It can feel like the fight of your life. Ironically, the best way to tackle this fight is to surrender… to God. The more we surrender to Him, the more we’ll be equipped for this very real struggle. In this series, we’ll look to God’s Word and find strength and wisdom for the fight. Join us for worship every Sunday at 9 am or 10:45 am. Full programming is available for kids from birth - 5th grade.

Easter 2019 is in the books, and it was an amazing day! I am praising God for everything that happened here. So many of our people invited others to come hear the good news about Jesus! In fact, we saw an all-time record attendance for a Sunday at Plum Creek: 1,009 people were here! That record is remarkable, because our church’s history goes back over 130 years. But do you know why I’m excited about seeing over a thousand in attendance? Every one of those numbers represents a name, and every name is a person with a story. We are serious about our mission of leading people to a life-changing relationship with Jesus, and we know that many of our Easter guests need that connection with Christ! Just them being here is a great step in that direction, and we pray for many more steps in the future!

I’m also excited and encouraged because months ago, our leadership started praying about a specific goal of 1,000 people for Easter. The motivation was not just to gather a crowd, but for God to give us a sense of urgency, and to use us to reach lost people and to make disciples. We’re seeing that the more we surrender to Him, and the more we’re willing to reach out to others in obedience to the Holy Spirit, the more we’ll see God at work, changing lives in the way that only He can. So, yes, let’s take a moment to celebrate and praise God, but let’s also be faithful in following up with our “ones,” continuing to pray and reach out and show the love of Christ however we can.

These are exciting times at Plum Creek and I am looking forward to the days ahead. However, many of you already know that I will be away from Plum Creek this summer.
I wanted to address that here in case you missed the announcement in the worship service. I will be on a sabbatical for 12 weeks between May 20 to August 11. A sabbatical is a time of extended leave for a minister, and the purpose is to spend time with God and to be renewed, but it’s also a time for studying and learning and acquiring new skills for the next phase of ministry. Sabbaticals can be very beneficial for both ministers and churches, which is why our elders approved this as an option long before I came to Plum Creek. Our handbook states, “Plum Creek wants its staff members to be spiritually and mentally healthy, growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ, and on the cutting edge of the best biblical and strategic thinking in their particular ministry areas. We desire for our staff to thrive in the ministry, to find refreshment, and to avoid burn-out.” The handbook goes on to explain that any of our ministers are eligible to apply for a sabbatical after serving here full time for at least five years.

It’s hard to believe, but I’ve been here just over seven and a half years. As I stated in the worship service, I am very grateful that we have a group of elders who are truly concerned about the health of our congregation and the health of our staff. They’ve been very supportive through this process. During my time away, Dylan and Jared will be doing the majority of the preaching, and I know they’re going to do a great job. I won’t be worshiping here at Plum Creek on Sundays, but every week I will be visiting other churches and meeting with other leaders and learning everything I can.

So, this is a new experience for me, but it’s tied to a personal goal that I have. This coming June will be 25 years since I went into full-time ministry, and I’m praying that God will allow me to be in ministry for at least 25 more years. I believe this sabbatical will be a helpful step in that direction. And just so we’re all clear… I love serving here at Plum Creek. My wife and my kids and I truly think of this as our church home. As long as God wants me here, I’m happy to stay. So I am very much looking forward to coming back in August with a new focus and a new energy. Thank you for your prayers and your support, and thank you for continuing to stay involved and engaged while I’m away. I’m confident that God will continue to use Plum Creek to help build His Kingdom!
