The Library was honored to be visited recently by the staff of a library in another county. They had heard so much about our wonderful space and offerings, they wanted to come see for themselves what all the fuss was about. They asked questions, they took notes, and they gave our staff a chance to show off a little. Above all, they reminded us that what we're doing is special and unique. We may be tiny, but we are mighty! We hope that you'll stop by the Library for any (or all!) of the great things we have going on in May.

The William Jeanes Memorial Library and Nicholas and Athena Karabots Center for Learning invite you to join us at the Highlands Mansion and Gardens on Saturday, May 20th, for a 90th Anniversary Celebration and Fundraiser. Tickets are on sale now, online or in the Library.
This special event is a slightly bigger version of our annual Wine and Cheese, which has been growing in popularity every year. It's a chance to gather with your neighbors and fellow Library supporters to enjoy wine tastings, guided by a sommelier, along with catered hors d'oeuvres, light music, and our ever-popular Raffles, all in the beautiful surroundings of this historic Whitemarsh property.
We'll have another, family-friendly Anniversary event later this year, (because--honestly, who doesn't like cake?) But we hope you'll join us on this special night, to celebrate 90 years of being "a resource center that serves the diverse and changing needs of the community by providing materials, programs and services for education, enrichment, and enjoyment."

NEW AT THE LIBRARY: A Seed Library!
|
|
The Library has a SEED LIBRARY now! Thanks to the hard work of our staff, our Seed Library is ready for browsing and taking. That's right, no Library Card needed. Pick up a handout, and help yourself to a brown seed packet or two. There are planting instructions on each packet. And if your harvest allows, you can donate seeds back to us in the fall or next spring! The staff repurposed our old Atlas Stand, and it's currently in our Nonfiction section. While you're back there, feel free to browse our Garden and Landscaping books and materials.
Let's get GROWING!

We all have that book or a story that made a lasting impact on us. Maybe we saw ourselves in a memoir whose writer overcame a great difficulty. Perhaps we grew empathy for fictional characters who reminded us of people in our lives. In honor of May being National Mental Health Awareness Month, we hope to highlight the impact reading can have on mental health as supported by a number of studies and mental health professionals. In fact, The University of Sussex found "individuals who had read for merely six minutes exhibited slower heart rates, less muscle tension, and reduced stress levels" (Readingpartners.org). These tangible results are impressive, second only to the feelings of emotional connection many of us feel when we turn the page of a great book. In addition to all the known benefits of literacy, reading can lead us and our loved ones through difficult times, making it even more important to increase basic literacy skills across our communities. We hope you will share the book that helped or uplifted you when you needed it most by chatting with our library staff during your next visit, emailing us at jeanesinfo@mclinc.org, or messaging us on social media (@williamjeanesmemoriallibrary on Instagram or @WmJnsLibrary on Twitter). We'll be adding your titles to our ongoing display in May.
For more resources on Mental Health, visit NAMI of Montgomery County PA.

Paws and Read
Wednesday, May 3rd
6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Community Room
School-age children are invited to come practice reading with registered therapy dogs and their owners. Most children have a natural affinity for and bond with dogs, and because dogs are non-judgmental, children are less self-conscious while reading aloud to them. Children can improve their reading skills in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, while enhancing self-esteem, motivating speech, and building confidence.
Space is limited and registration is required. You will receive an email or a phone call on the afternoon of the program with the specific time slot your child will be given to read with a dog. Their time will depend on how many dogs we have booked and how many children register, but it will generally be between 10-20 minutes.
Please complete a separate registration form for each child you wish to attend.
