Think this year will be a tough one for all of us

It’s difficult enough to ask for support during good times… but during these uncertain times?

Fotokids semi-annual online funder is coming up May 7 th and like everyone else I’m worried about keeping us going in upcoming months. Although the government has closed all schools we still are obligated to pay the kids educational scholarships, their monthly school tuition and fees, pay our staff's modest salaries and keep our school secure.

Even though we closed the Fotokids school due to the Coronavirus on March 15 th , the teachers and staff are all working, conferencing every Monday by internet, connecting with the families weekly and getting out food baskets so dearly needed by a population that has to work every day to put something on the table.

It is a day-by-day existence for the kids families and for ours staff’s families as well. Our staff’s salaries range from $350 a month to $700 and these Fotokids teachers work hard, use their pay to help support their families. All of them went through our program as youngsters and have been with the project in professional capacities over 15+ years. They are our treasures. We can’t afford to lose them.

We know what a difficult and challenging time this is for everyone , and we understand that there are many individuals and organizations in need.
If you’re in a position to support us we’ll be extremely grateful to receive that help, and any donation to the May 7 th campaign will contribute to the cash resources we need to address the immediate future, to make sure our staff can survive and continue to support the students and their families.

And if you could let others know about this campaign, we’ll appreciate that immensely, too.

Below is an article I wrote on request for Harvard’s David Rockefeller Center for Latin America Revista. You can use it if you would like to pass along to any others.
