Hello all,
May is Mental Health Month and I wanted to check in on you as we all are still reeling from our last year.
Our community has many resources to encourage you to strengthen your mental health – whether it’s getting professional help or getting outside and taking in the fresh air.
Consider a walk around the beautiful Chollas Creek Park. We are proud of this outdoor linear park and the way it creates a peaceful pathway from Market Street and Euclid Avenue. If you haven’t been yet, take a walk through and check out the public art … you never know, you may find a 10-foot barrel cactus sculpture!
I also want to highlight Open Heart Leaders, an African American female-led organization providing full mental health and education services. This organization was a Southeastern San Diego COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund recipient, and they have added to their services through virtual events to provide safe spaces for people to talk about the issues they face daily. Check out their programs, open to all, including interactive discussions, mentoring and counseling.
If you need a mindful break, look into Moon Garden Meditation, a business that went through CONNECT ALL @ the Jacobs Center’s business accelerator program. From live guided meditations on social media to simple tips, you can learn about creating calm moments in your daily routine.

Has COVID-19 impacted your ability to pay rent or utilities in San Diego? Applications have been extended through September to receive rent assistance. If you need help, there are video tutorials from the San Diego Housing Commission in English, Spanish and Vietnamese on the City of San Diego’s website below. |

SD Access for All - FREE WiFi |
The City of San Diego is now offering free internet access at over 300 locations, free laptops and cellar hotspot rentals!
Free WiFi can be found and accessed at San Diego libraries and parks. Library members can check out a cellular hotspot for up to 30 days at a time, and laptops are available for use on-site. Check out the interactive map below to find free internet access near you.

Access Youth Academic Squash & Academic ProgramTryouts |
Attention all athletes, learners & leaders!
Tryouts for Access Youth Academy's academic and squash program are right around the corner on May 8, 15 and 22. No prior squash experience needed; they will teach you! This program provides students with academic tutoring, college access support and teaches them how to play squash – a two-player game, like tennis but indoors. All tryouts are open to current 6th-8th graders.

Free How-To Festival San Diego |
Tune in to the virtual How-To Festival on May 22 at 11 a.m. to learn how to do everything from baking bread to brewing kombucha, writing 3D graffiti to speaking basic Japanese, and so much more! This event is entertaining for all ages and something the whole family can do for FREE.

"Design Your Future" Panel Recap & Internship Opportunities |
The Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, together with the San Diego Architectural Foundation and as part of Open House San Diego, hosted “Design Your Future: Careers that Change Communities” on March 5. The panel featured a diverse group of architecture, engineering and construction professionals who talked about their work and their career paths. "Towards Belonging" Dance Production Featured in The San Diego Union-Tribune |
The La Jolla Playhouse was featured in The San Diego Union-Tribune for its production of “Towards Belonging,” produced by choreographer Anjanette Maraya-Ramey and videographer Eboni “Eb” Harvey. The free dance film was produced in association with the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation’s Arts Park @ Chollas Creek. The La Jolla Playhouse and the Jacobs Center were especially excited to launch the piece – featuring a team of all Black, indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) artists – on the first day of AAPI Month. |
