Welcome to the Master of Accounting (MAcc) Program at the College of William and Mary! I am Marc Moyers, Faculty Director for the Master of Accounting Program, and I am looking forward to greeting you and your classmates at our orientation sessions in August.

Our curriculum is designed to give you the skills to excel as the accounting profession adapts to a changing economic, political, and business environment. In the fall, the classes focus on developing your professional acumen. You will research professional accounting, audit, and tax standards, analyze complex transactions, and understand the issues currently confronting the accounting profession. In the spring, you will have the flexibility to design your program of study. You can immerse yourself in one area of expertise, and maybe complete an emphasis in accounting analytics, taxation, audit, or valuation & advisory services. Alternatively, you can take advantage of the broad range of available MAcc, MBA and Tax Law electives to study a varied and well-rounded set of topics. In addition, there is the possibility to spend the first half of the spring semester in a winter internship at a CPA firm.

I am delighted to let you know that our accounting analytics emphasis has received the STEM designation. The academic rigor and technical acumen implied by this designation is a great differentiator when you are applying for jobs. It will also help international students with the OPT process.

We also have an exciting option for students interested in pursuing a Ph.D., either immediately upon graduation or after some years of public accounting experience. Our “Ph.D. Preparation Program” prepares students for successful application to prestigious Ph.D. granting universities. Graduation from a prestigious doctoral program in accounting followed by successful placement as an assistant professor at a strong research and teaching university generally carries a starting salary in excess of $240,000. If you would like more information about this option, please contact me.

Many of you are likely concerned about the impact any COVID-19 restrictions will have on fall classes. Our current plan is for classes to be held in person. In a May 18, 2021 communication from President Rowe (link here), you will see the guidelines currently planned for the fall semester. You will also note an update to these guidelines is expected on July 15, 2021 and we will communicate those changes to you once they are announced.

Finally, I expect that you will build strong friendships that will last a lifetime as you work hard with your classmates over this ten-month program. Your class is composed of many wonderful individuals, each of whom brings a different set of abilities and skills. I encourage you to get to know all of your classmates well, especially those who might have different backgrounds or different strengths than yourself. This program gives you the opportunity to begin building the professional network that will ultimately lead to career success.

I am looking forward to working with you and I am excited that you have chosen to be a part of the William & Mary community over the upcoming academic year. I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer and I will see you in a few weeks!

Sincerely,
Marc B. Moyers
