The mission of the Mobile Bar Association is to elevate the legal profession to the highest possible standard, provide professional development and cultivate networking opportunities amongst its members. Our bar association has excelled in carrying out this mission for the nearly 153 years it has been in existence. With twelve Sections, twenty Committees, and numerous other subcommittees and groups, our members work hard every day to make the most of our Bar. In last month’s article, each of the Section and Committee Chairs was recognized. These members devote a tremendous amount of time and energy to making the Bar succeed for our membership. This year, almost every Section will have a Judge serving as Judicial Liaison. This arrangement allows our members direct access to the bench should an issue arise with which they require advice or assistance. If you have not already done so, I encourage each of you to reach out to the Chair of the Committee you are interested in and ask how you can get involved.

We held our Mardi Gras Social on February 17 for the Order of Polka Dots parade. Even with the threat of inclement weather, the turnout was outstanding. All in attendance appeared to have a great time, especially the kids. Thanks to all the sponsors, our Entertainment Committee Chair, Garrett Zoghby, and MBA Executive Director Ann Sirmon for putting on a first-class event.

Our first monthly membership luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, March 25, at the Battle House Hotel. There will not be a Zoom option, so please be sure to RSVP with Ann. When you RSVP for the luncheon, you may notice that the cost for the luncheon has increased from $23 to $25. For the past few years, the Battle House has charged the MBA $25 per plate, but instead of passing that cost on to members, the MBA has absorbed the $2 difference. Beginning this year, the Battle House will charge the MBA $27 per plate. When notified of the increase earlier this year, the Executive Committee voted to once again cover the extra $2 to keep the cost to our members as low as possible. Having served on the MBA Executive Committee in various roles for many years, I can tell you that the cost and location of our monthly luncheons have been thoroughly studied and many alternatives have been considered. We will continue to study this issue and consider all available and reasonable options.

I look forward to seeing everyone at our March 25 luncheon, as well as the upcoming Section and Committee meetings. As always, please reach out to me with any questions, concerns or comments.
D. Brian Murphy
Mobile Bar Association, 2022 President

Ann's Article
Happy March! Hope everyone had a great Mardi Gras season! I would love to introduce our new part-time Membership Specialist – Lydia Smith. She was home-schooled during high school due to her travel schedule as a violinist with the Mobile Symphony Orchestra. She graduated from the University of Mobile in 2021 with a degree in Strategic Communications. In addition to playing the violin, Lydia enjoys volunteering at her church, working with special needs children, and, of course, making coffee.

Lydia joined us in early February. As Membership Specialist, she will assist with meetings, events, and member engagement for the Mobile Bar Association. Additionally, she will help to maintain the membership database and increase our presence through social media. You’ve probably already seen some of her great social media posts on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram. Please stop by Mobile Bar Headquarters and introduce yourself to Lydia. We would love to see you!

Lastly, just as inflation is impacting everything else we do, higher costs and expenses are hitting the Mobile Bar Association, too. As Brian mentioned, starting in March, the cost for attending a Mobile Bar luncheon will increase from $23 per person to $25 per person. For the last two years, the Mobile Bar Association has paid $25 per person for the luncheons at the Battle House Hotel. In turn, we have been charging our members $23 per person. Now, with the increased costs of food and labor, the Mobile Bar Association will be paying $27 per person and charging members $25 per person. Also note: If you register for a luncheon in advance and do not show, the Mobile Bar Association is still paying for that meal and will have to invoice you for the no-show. Your Executive Committee has studied costs, locations, and alternatives for the monthly luncheons for many years. We will continue to study this issue and consider all available and reasonable options.

Thanks again for all your support and feedback! We are always interested in hearing your thoughts and ideas about how to improve the Mobile Bar Association and our activities. Please feel free to contact me any time by phone at 251.433.9790 or by email at asirmon@mobilebarassociation.com. We are listening.

Family attorney Alison Herlihy in her latest venture, Kindred Yoga in Midtown Mobile.
At its core, yoga is about unity—connecting the mind and body for the betterment of both. Alison Herlihy, a Mobile-based attorney, has been an avid yoga practitioner for more than 20 years. During that time she has also developed a busy family law practice and built her own firm, Herlihy Family Law. Now, Alison is connecting those two passions: In February, she opened a second business, Kindred Yoga, in Midtown, drawing on her experience running a law firm to handle tax, accounting, and other back-end issues for the new venture. “It’s great to have something you love so much, that gives you so much, and give it to other people,” she says. Alison started practicing yoga at the University of Texas at Austin in 1999, long before yoga was commonplace in the U.S. “It’s really appealing to me how it’s all connected, your mental space and your physical body,” she says. “You can’t separate it or ignore one or the other and expect the other to be okay.”  She started teaching yoga at the Moorer YMCA downtown in 2016 after a teacher encouraged her and eventually completed formal training. In 2018, she moved to Glow Yoga in Mobile, where she met Elizabeth McCraw, her partner in Kindred Yoga. The studio offers a range of classes for yogis at all levels. “Our goal is to be inclusive,” she says. Alison says running two businesses is a lot, but “yoga doesn’t take time, it gives time … you feel energized from it.” Click here to check out Kindred Yoga.

On March 1st we reach the height of our raucous and joyful Gulf Coast Mardi Gras season, and what follows is often a quieter period of reflection. One thing we are mindful of at SAVLP is the tradition of pro bono service that is unique to the legal profession. While most professionals pledge an adherence to high standards (for example, the Hippocratic oath for doctors, and the pledge of lawful honesty and human betterment for engineers), the legal profession is one of the few that promotes pro bono service as a core value for the ideal practitioner. Our local bar associations embrace this philosophy wholeheartedly. Lawyers who practice in Mobile, Baldwin, Clarke, and Washington counties consistently demonstrate their commitment to pro bono work, donating their time and expertise to represent those who couldn’t otherwise afford legal help. We thank you for your personal investment in your cities and towns, and your belief that solving problems for or between neighbors helps us all.

Volunteers Needed!
  • Thursday, March 10: Civil Legal Advice Clinic – Mobile County Courthouse
  • Thursday, March 24: Wills for Heroes Clinic – Spanish Fort City Hall
  • Thursday, April 14: Civil Legal Advice Clinic – Mobile County Courthouse
  • Tuesday, April 26: Guardianship Clinic – Augusta Evans School
  • (multiple dates TBD ): In-Office Advice Clinic – SAVLP Office, Commerce Building, Mobile

We are also on site every Tuesday at Prodisee Pantry in Spanish Fort and once a month at the United Way of Southwest Alabama’s Clarke County Outreach Center in Grove Hill, AL. If you or your firm would like to know more about our work at these locations, please give us a call!

Registration has begun for the 2022 Alabama Legal Food Frenzy, the Alabama Bar Association’s annual fundraiser supporting food banks across the state. Last year’s Food Frenzy raised more than $55,000—the equivalent of 275,000 pounds of food—to help Alabamians who are food insecure. Let’s see if we can do even better this year!

One in four Alabama children struggle with food insecurity, meaning they lack reliable access to enough food for a healthy, active life. And the economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic have created new pressures for many families. The Food Frenzy is the Alabama legal community’s collective response.

The fundraiser is structured as a friendly competition among Alabama’s law firms and legal organizations, but individuals can make unaffiliated donations, too. To participate as a group, click here to sign up your firm, organization, department, or office. The Food Frenzy will run from April 4 through April 15, 2022. Donations will be collected through the website. Every $10 donated can provide 20 meals for people who need them. In South Alabama, donations will support Feeding the Gulf Coast. When the Frenzy ends, awards will be presented by category (sole practitioner, small/medium/large firm, legal organization), and the team that raises the most money per employee will receive the Attorney General’s Cup.

If you have any questions about the Food Frenzy, contact Tiffany Ray at tiffany@taylormartino.com.
