20212022 Michelle Knoebel.jpg

By Michelle Knoebel, CMB

President, MBA of Florida

How time flies! It’s already spring and my term as MBAF President is quickly coming to a close. I continue to be impressed with the dedicated people volunteering their time and talent for our association, our members and mortgage lenders throughout Florida. Highlights from our year so far!

Eastern Secondary Conference and Annual Convention

Register Now!

You won’t want to miss it! Our two committees are working hard to ensure our 18th Eastern Secondary Conference and 68th Annual Convention will be one of the best ever. We plan to knock it out of the park and we have an incredible line up of sessions and speakers. The conferences are being held back to back with separate events for each and three crossovers sessions in between. The event will be held June 21-23 at the beautiful Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress in Orlando. The draft of the program, the registration, exhibit and sponsorship forms are online and registration is open. The early registration deadline is May 7th. It is very important to make your room reservations now and make sure you grab a sponsorship or exhibit position today. Last year we sold out of exhibit space! See information directlybelow my message with program information, links to register and important early registration and hotel room reservation deadlines.

Educational Opportunities

Our Education Committee has presented three webinars so far this fiscal year and participation has been excellent. Along with the webinars the MBA of Florida is exploring a partnership which will allow us to offer discounted Continuing Education credit courses to our members. We believe this will be a tremendous benefit and we look forward to sharing the details!

Membership

It's a new calendar year and half way through the MBA of Florida's fiscal year. That means you can join the MBA of Florida today and your dues will be paid through June 2023. Members also receive a discount when you register for our convention. We need members and participation and I encourage you to join or speak with those at your firm who can begin the process. Potential Members - Click Here to Access Membership Information

Legislative

Although our annual Tallahassee Capitol Hill visits were cancelled due to the pandemic our Legislative Representative Eric Prutsman, Esq continued his long tenure of representing the best interests of the MBA of Florida. Eric continues to provide not only in depth information about each proposed bill that may have impacts to our industry but also provides an excellent overview of the bills that are most important. This information is emailed out to our members and also available via the Education link on our website. Click Here for the End of 2022 Session Report

I truly appreciate the support I continue to receive from the Executive Team, Past Presidents, Directors, Chapter Presidents and Committee Members who are making this year a very successful one. I also want to thank our Executive Director, Brenda Thomas. Thank you for keeping us in line and helping us achieve our goals. I look forward to seeing you all in June!

Are you familiar with the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, and did it have a positive influence in your life and career?

Covey pic.png

Published by Tim Allen, CMB®

Below is a Stephen Covey quote that has hung in my office for years and it has helped me to motivate myself and to give good advice to others especially in times of change like we are going through today.

Early in my career I was fortunate enough to participate in a 7 Habits of Highly Effective People for Managers in a live multi day workshop presented by Stephen Covey, the author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. At that time, I was a top producing loan officer that had recently been promoted to sales manager and I didn't yet really understand my role and the importance of teamwork. We really dug into the 7 habits in this workshop and how to effectively apply them in working with others.

Our business is all about teamwork and this is where I was taught how working proactively within a team produces far greater results than I could ever accomplish working on my own.

I continue to use the principles from the 7 Habits all the time.

1.   Be proactive

2.   Begin with the end in mind

3.   Put first things first

4.   Think win/win

5.   Seek to understand first, before making yourself understood

6.   Learn to synergize

7.   Sharpen the saw

The pre-work for the workshop consisted of a detailed self-assessment questionnaire and an assessment from 3 peers, 2 managers and 3 people who reported to me, the assessments were put in sealed envelopes and sent directly to the workshop. My associates assumed that their assessment would be kept confidential but that is not what happened. On the first day of the workshop, we opened and read all the assessments and I learned a lot both good and bad about myself.

This book and this workshop helped me to be a better employee, manager, friend, husband, and a better father than I otherwise would have been. I am grateful that my employer selected me to participate in this program, I am also grateful for the honest assessments from my associates because they helped me learn things about myself that I may otherwise never know. If you every have an opportunity to take a workshop like this, I highly recommend you take advantage of the opportunity.

If you are a mortgage banker and your company will pay for it, I highly recommend MBA’s Future Leaders program. MBA Education's Future Leaders Program is a valuable opportunity and platform the enables you to build your leadership skills through experiential learning, in-person collaboration and peer group interactions. Not to mention, the networking opportunities that come with an exclusive program like this. More info is here at

During my year as president on the MBAF I started MBAF’s Future Leaders Program and it’s still going and it’s FREE! It’s a great program designed to develop teamwork and leadership skills. MBAF’s Future Leaders Program is dedicated to identifying and cultivating the next generation of industry leaders by delivering a comprehensive leadership training experience for selected participants through four events offered throughout the year.
