President's Message
I hope the new year brings everyone good fortune! As always, I am grateful for the continued commitment and enthusiasm of each and every one of you. Here's to a year filled with artistic innovation, collaboration, and unlimited creativity. Happy New Year!
Birds, birds, birds… This month is all about birds. The MBAA is collaborating with the Morro Bay Bird Festival and the For the Birds exhibit, take-in is TOMORROW between 10am and 2pm. I am looking forward to seeing everyone’s bird inspired artwork. We were planning on having new take-in forms up on the website and available in person for Tuesday’s take-in, however, it is looking like they will not be available until the next exhibit. If you would like to volunteer, please reach out. The MBAA volunteers are a team of amazing folks with a diverse set of skills, we are always looking for more folks to join us. With your help we can do even more epic things!
Come take flight with us on Sunday, January 7th, 2-4pm at the For the Birds reception. Thanks to the efforts of Jeff Carney and Lynn Hessler, the MBAA, once again, has wings! A new, lovely set of wings will be gracing the outside entry of the gallery, they are being installed just in time for the For the Birds take-in. Not only are they beautiful, but they offer a perfect photo opportunity. Don’t forget to tag #ArtCenterMorroBay when posting on social media.
On January 8, from 3-5pm, Julie Dunn will be sharing her unique style of Tempera Batik Painting at the gallery. Her technique is characterized by a vivid use of color, an appealing textural surface, and compelling imagery. Tempera Batik is a style of painting that was developed to resemble true batik, without the use of fabric, wax or dyes. Julie has won numerous awards for her paintings, and is the owner of Park Street Gallery, in downtown Paso Robles, where her unique work is on permanent display. Julie will demonstrate step-by-step how she creates her unique paintings. Demo Days are always free and open to the public. They are held every month on the 2nd Monday from 3 to 5pm.
On January 10th, from 5:30-7pm we will be hosting The Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce’s Membership Mixer at the gallery. This is a great opportunity to network with other merchants in our community. We will be serving wine from Harmony Cellars.
It is with a heavy heart, that I must share the news of Bob Azevedo’s passing. Bob was an incredible asset to our organization, a supporter of nonprofits, dedicated to civic service. He supported the arts as a MBAA Board Member, yet, he did not consider himself to be an artist. He volunteered as the MBAA’s Treasurer, maintaining the books for 7+ years! When he started, the Art Association’s books were an absolute disaster, he stepped in and organized the mess. His accounting knowledge, perseverance and due diligence made a significant contribution to the financial health of our organization. When I met Bob, he was in his 90s and was just getting ready to retire from his position as MBAA Treasurer. His humor, practicality and great stories always made working with him an absolute joy. He will be greatly missed. If you would like to send condolences to Bob’s wife, Marty, email artcenter.morrobay@gmail.com with the subject line “Marty Azevedo,” and we will respond with her contact information. His legacy of commitment and dedication will never be forgotten.
I am looking forward to 2024 and I hope you are too.
Cheers!
Kathleen
