Phase II trial of brain MRI surveillance in stage IV breast cancer
Current guidelines do not recommend routine brain MRI screening for patients with stage IV breast cancer who have no neurological symptoms. This study aimed to determine how often brain metastases are found in these patients through early screening.
Researchers conducted brain MRIs on 101 patients with different breast cancer subtypes (HR+/HER2-, HER2+, and triple-negative). The initial scans detected brain metastases in 14% of patients. A follow-up MRI at six months showed an increase, with about 25% of patients across all subtypes developing brain metastases.
These findings suggest that routine brain MRI screening may help detect metastases earlier in certain patients. Further research is needed to refine screening recommendations.
