Five Things To Do / Know This Week:

1.) Questions about how to use the Online Plan Room? Do you want to learn some tricks and tips to help you better navigate it? Join us for our free training this Thursday, February 15.

2.) When it comes to AEC industry software, Bluebeam Revu is one of the most popular. With functionality for Design Review, Estimating, Collecting Field Data, and others, Bluebeam is not your average PDF software. With a slate of Bluebeam courses coming up in March, join instructor Troy DeGroot with UChapter2 next Tuesday, February 20, to ask questions, match your skillset to the appropriate course(s), and learn more about each.

3.) It's the fastest, most intense show in Las Vegas. Fans packing the area love the action. It's the Super Bowl...of masonry. Before 60,000-some fans took to Allegiant Stadium to watch the 49ers/Chiefs football game, SpecMix Bricklayer 500 was underway a couple of miles down the Vegas strip with masons competing to lay the most bricks in 60-minutes.

4.) Wednesday, February 14, is Valentine's Day! In honor of the day, we wrote a special poem specially for our members.

5.) Test Your Knowledge:

In the early 20th century, stop signs weren't any specific color or even shape. So in 1922, the American Association of State Highway Officials (AASHO) convened to select a standard design. AASHO did consider making the standard color for stop signs red, but instead, they chose a yellow design with black letters.

Why wasn't the color red chosen?

A.) Too many other standard signs were also colored red.

B.) The chosen shade of red was too dark to see at night.

C.) It was the Association President's least favorite color.

D.) Red dyes faded too much over time.

See the Answer

Roses are red, steel beams are true, with construction partners like you, our love is forever true 💘 Happy Valentine's Day!

U.S. Market Report: February 2024

At MBEX, we understand the importance of staying informed about the latest trends and insights in the building construction industry.

That's why we rely on reputable sources like the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), and the U.S. Census Bureau, to provide valuable insights into the health of various sectors, including commercial, multi-family, institutional, and industrial construction.

Here's a detailed snapshot offering our members a big picture view of the U.S. market and its key metrics for the month, including construction spending, demand for design services, contractor backlogs, and material price trends.

KEY POINTS FOR FEBRUARY 2024

• Spending on vertical construction (i.e., "commercial buildings" work) is at a near all-time high, at $851.4-billion in annualized spending. However, inflation plays into this equation; building projects are more costly to plan, design, and build.

• Multi-family continues to shine, with 11.9% YOY growth to $135.9-billion in annual spending. Economists are calling for a slowdown, but not until 2025-26. Even at that, construction spending will hover at near all-time highs.(And we always take economist's predictions with a few grains of salt.)

• Other hot sectors: manufacturing, education, healthcare, public safety, and religious.

• The 2024-25 forecast (from AIA) for key markets looks promising; only commercial / retail and office are expected to see a pullback in construction spending. Hotels, multi-family, education, and healthcare are all expected to see strong spending increases.

• The average U.S. contractor currently has 9.1-months worth of building construction work in the pipeline, which is slightly higher for the month and on par with the previous year.

• AIA's Architecture Billings Index has remained below 50 for the past six months, which means more firms than not are experiencing a decrease in billings. (As of December 2023, Billings was at a score of 45.4, Design Contracts at 50, and Inquiries at 53.)

• Construction material prices have largely stabilized. We're not seeing the volatile swings in prices and availability experienced during the pandemic.

Data is gleaned from reputable economic sources, including the American Institute of Architects, Associated Builders and Contractors, and the U.S. Census Bureau.

2024 Legislative Session Preview

Governor Tim Walz released his public infrastructure spending proposal in late January. The $982-million plan includes $830-million in general obligation (GO) bonds with a heavy focus on asset preservation.

The state currently has over $7.6-billion in requests with $4.7-billion in state agency requests and $2.9-billion from local governments. The House and the Senate have been touring projects across the state over the summer, fall, and winter. They will have their own proposals for infrastructure projects and funding discussed in this session. Any proposals that utilize bonding dollars require a supermajority to support, which means bipartisan support is necessary in both the House and the Senate to pass a bonding bill.

Projects in Walz's proposed plan include:

Rush City - Education & Programming Expansion: $46.6 million

• For an expansion of Incarcerated Persons' educational, rehabilitative, and programming space needs at the Department's Rush City Correctional Facility. This project would add roughly 28,000-square-feet of new, additional programming space and remodel roughly 16,000-square-feet of existing space at the facility.

High-Priority Bridges: $40 million

• For investments in high-priority trunk highway bridges, including construction capital costs, project development, and engineering activities.

Saint Paul College - Academic Excellence Renovation: $31.8 million

• To renovate classroom and common space on the St. Paul College campus. This project will reconfigure academic program areas, update classrooms and labs, repurpose a theater space to consolidate Student Services, and demolish the College Learning Center building.

State Patrol Headquarters Building: $22.5 million

• To acquire land for and design a new headquarters building for the State Patrol. This building would include office space, training space, fleet operations, and evidence storage.

Minneapolis Veterans Home - Building 16 Remodel: $16 million

• For design and construction of a remodel of Building 16 at the Minneapolis Veterans Home. The remodel would provide updated facilities for treatment and program space to better meet the needs of residents.

St. Peter Water & Sewer Construction: $13 million

• To upgrade and replace the water, sanitary and storm sewer infrastructure at the St. Peter Campus. These systems have exceeded their useful life and their replacement will ensure 1,100 clients and staff have access to functioning and safe water infrastructure.

Statewide Drinking Water Contamination Mitigation for Private Wells: $10 million

• To remove manmade contaminants, such as PFAS, from the drinking water supplies of communities in Minnesota that are unable to provide safe drinking water due to these contaminants. This will fund a Phase II project for the Red Oaks community in Andover and potentially cover additional smaller projects with activities such as: water main installation, connecting private homes to municipal water systems, capping private wells, and drilling new wells.

National Sports Center Asset Preservation (Blaine): $9.2 million

• For asset preservation for projects at the National Sports Center (NSC) in Blaine. These projects are intended to ensure the safety and health of participants and staff using the Center’s facilities.

Historic Sites Asset Prevention: $5.6 million

• For preservation and restoration of historic structures, landscapes, and building systems in the State Historic Sites Network and for monuments located statewide. Projects are prioritized based on long range planning, building analysis, and structural conditions.

Renovation of Hibbing Readiness Center: $4.2 million

• For a major renovation to the 22,039-square-foot Hibbing Readiness Center. The renovation will improve its functionality, better accommodate the assigned units, and sustain the facility into future years.

BCA Bemidji Regional Office and Laboratory Expansion: $4.1 million

• For design and land acquisition costs related to the expansion of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension's Bemidji regional facility. Once complete, this project would renovate the current 26,000-square-foot Bemidji Regional Office and Forensic Science Laboratory and add a new 27,000-square-foot building expansion to provide the facility with the space and resources needed to meet increased regional demand for BCA services.

Minnesota Zoo - Asset Preservation: $4.1 million

• For replacing or repairing skylights, masonry, roofs, and bridge decking. Other priorities include upgrading or renovating HVAC systems, accessibility, animal exhibits, and parking lot asphalt.

Greater Minn. Business Development Public Infrastructure Program: $3 million

• For the Business Development Public Infrastructure (BDPI) program. BDPI is a competitive grant program that provides cities in Greater Minnesota with up to 50% of public infrastructure costs necessary to support economic development. Eligible public infrastructure projects include sewers, streets, wastewater collection and treatment, drinking water, and utility extensions.

Perpich Center for Arts Education - Asset Preservation: $1.6 million

• For asset preservation to update, repair, and replace various building systems.

Addition and Renovation of Bloomington Readiness Center: $255,000

• For predesign for a major renovation and expansion of the 42,000-square-foot Bloomington Readiness Center. The renovation will ultimately improve its functionality, better accommodate the assigned units, and sustain the facility into future years.

Minnesota legislators and advocates started convening this past Monday, February 12, and will continue to do so for the next three months.

CONSTRUCTION HEADLINES

WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION

👷‍♀️ Women's PPE in the Construction Industry is a Matter of Life and Death

A proposed OSHA rule seeks to bring the construction industry PPE requirements in line with other industries that explicitly require equipment to fit properly. But having proper PPE requirements is only half the battle. Companies also need to understand and prioritize women's PPE. Contractors that do so will contribute to the comfort, safety and retention of women in the construction industry, while also promoting a culture of inclusivity and safety. (CONEXPO - CON / AGG)

ROBOTICS + ROOFING

🐕‍🦺 Introducing Rufus, the Automated Roofing Robot from Renovate Robotics

Rufus is an automated roofing robot designed to double productivity for asphalt shingle installation and improve safety for roofing contractors. Roofing has the second highest fatality rate of all occupations in the United States in 2022, and roofing contractors consistently struggle to recruit skilled labor. By doubling productivity, Renovate Robotics is empowering contractors to increase their revenue without scaling beyond their existing roofing crews. (Roofing Contractor)

CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS

🧱 Scientists Develop Game-Changing 'Glass Brick' That Could Revolutionize Construction

A team of materials scientists from Empa (Swiss Federal Laboratory for Science and Technology) and the Slovak University of Technology have found a way to reduce lighting and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) energy demands without having to increase the thickness of the insulation layer. By using silica aerogel granules, they have created an aerogel glass brick, which is a translucent and thermally insulating material. Not only is it a highly attractive solution, but it would also help save heating costs by increasing solar gains and reducing the use of artificial light. (Yahoo! Tech)

LABOR + WORKFORCE

📋  Skilled Trades Need Effective Training Cultures

With the tight labor market for field service and skilled trades industries, employers must increase productivity with the same number of people. When skilled workers are trained, educated, and well-informed, their value to the company increases. That value is measured in increased revenue, fewer callbacks, higher completion rates, and ultimately, increased profitability. As the company's profits increase, they can invest in things that make them an employer of choice in the market --- competitive wages and benefits, as well as training and educational opportunities that set team members up to succeed. (Contracting Business)

FEDERAL PROJECTS + INFRASTRUCTURE

✔️ How to Get the Most Bang for Your Buck Out of the Infrastructure Bill

For both companies and longtime contractors that have hesitated to enter the U.S. federal market, new opportunities and advantages may be present through current infrastructure spending. Agencies are beginning to make awards from this approximately $550-billion funding, but there's a long road ahead. If these initiatives are in line with a construction organization's current services, or if the organization is looking to strategically expand, the IIJA may present substantial opportunities. (Construction Executive)

🦺 PROJECT OF THE WEEK

State Fields Design Proposals for $48M Crime Lab in Mankato

State officials are seeking design services for what they call a "state-of-the-art criminal investigation and laboratory" facility in Mankato with a price tag of $48-million. The proposed 44,000-square-foot building is funded through design, but the project still needs construction money from the Legislature. The building would serve about 780,000 people and 150 affiliated agencies in southern Minnesota. Forensic analysis, law enforcement training, investigative assistance in criminal investigations and other BCA activities would take place there. (Finance & Commerce)
