MBI's 2018 Legislative Agenda

Last week, the MBI Board of Directors approved their 2018 legislative agenda that included recommendations from the MBI Government Affairs Committee. Throughout the summer and fall, our public affairs team has been working to identify priorities that we would focus on to improve the commercial construction industry.

The 2018 legislative agenda includes:
  • Supporting a 20-year extension of SAVE for school infrastructure;
  • Protecting infrastructure funds from being used for non-infrastructure projects including water quality;
  • Supporting any and all efforts to bolster participation in the commercial construction workforce;
  • Taking a leadership role in alternative project delivery discussions;
  • Supporting all tax reform efforts to reduce the burden on Iowa taxpayers that do not affect current public funding streams necessary for infrastructure;
  • Address two changes to mechanic's lien law;
  • Support the efforts of the University of Northern Iowa to secure funding for the Industrial Technology Center Renovation and Expansion project.
There is always something interesting going on at the Iowa Statehouse during the legislative session and in an effort to enhance MBI's advocacy efforts and keep members informed, our public affairs team will host a series of webinars during the 2018 legislative session.

Every third Friday of the month in which the legislature is in session, we will provide members with insights into what is happening at the Capitol, as well as keep members informed on business and construction-related issues.  Participants can hear first-hand on what our elected officials are talking about, while also learning on how they can help move MBI's legislative agenda forward.

Ready, Set, BIM!
Trenching and Excavating - Training is the Key!
The technology race is on and one of the key players in controlling costs, improving efficiencies, and collaborating effectively is Building Information Modeling or BIM. The technology of BIM has been around the commercial construction industries for several years and continues to evolve and contractors are constantly finding new ways to implement it into their projects.

Join fellow MBI members for a one-hour webinar titled Ready, Set, BIM...Are You Ready for the Technology Race? on March 6, 2018 at 11:00 am. Art Theusch of Collaborative Construction Group - Lansing, MI will introduce you to some of the major impacts that BIM is having on companies and projects around the country, and will help you explore opportunities to utilize BIM within your firm.

The past few years have seen a significant increase in the number of injuries and fatalities around trenching and excavation work in Iowa. A common theme surrounding many of these types of incidents is training of the equipment operator, personnel in the trench, competent person, etc. The lack of training or improper training in the area of trenching and excavating can be and in many cases is fatal.

As a result of these facts, Master Builders of Iowa is offering Trenching and Excavating: What You Need to Know! to help construction companies educate and protect their employees from being the next statistic. This program designed for project superintendents, foremen, and other field leadership personnel will address soil types, protection systems, hazard identification, and case study reviews.

I was sitting in the main office at Oskaloosa High School in early October, having flashbacks to my own high school days and waiting for an industrial technology instructor to come meet me so I could explain to his students why the commercial construction industry was the right path for them. Sitting a few chairs away was a student, maybe 16 years old, wearing a Yankees ball cap. >>>Read More

Unfortunately,  the idea that drivers can multi-task on the road-calling customers, checking in with the home office, or catching up on voicemails- has led to the belief that hands-free devices and apps are a safe alternative to using a regular cell phone,  but that is far from the truth. In fact, several studies recognized by the National Safety Council (NSC) show that hands-free devices are no safer than handheld phones, as the brain remains focused on a cell phone conversation over the main task of driving. >>>Read More
