MBM Contracting Office
Addition & Renovation

(Throwback project!)

In 2004, MBM purchased and renovated a dilapidated metal building in Baldwin Borough and constructed an addition for offices and warehouse storage.  The project included the renovation of an existing metal building. The exterior metal panels were removed and replaced with pre-engineered panels. An addition was added for office space with the existing building used as a warehouse. The 14,000 SF pre-engineered steel building was a design/build by MBM Contracting, Inc. MBM recently renovated the interior of their offices to update finishes and layout.

UPMC Primary Care East
White Oak

UPMC Primary Care East relocated into a new facility in White Oak, PA. The facility, located in a strip center, was an existing doctor's office. A partial addition was added to the space and MBM completed the 7,600 SF fit-out. The project was completed within the 16-week schedule and they began seeing patients in February 2018. The new primary care office includes 15 exam rooms, an x-ray room, six doctor's offices, large reception and waiting room, and staff lounge.

Danny P. Brown
Danny P. Brown
President
MBM Contracting, Inc.

When Danny returned from serving in the military as a Marine, his brother, Harry, was heading off to the Army.  He made a promise to him that upon his safe return they would start a construction company together.  Eight years later, MBM Contracting was established.  The company was named after their children at the time the company was established, Matt, Bryan, and Missy (all whom now work at MBM).

After receiving an Honorable discharge from the Marine Corp., Danny attended both Edinboro University and the University of Pittsburgh to study Construction Management.  In March of 1988 MBM began as a small, family-owned construction company.  The first office was located in a single room in the basement of a building located on West Liberty Avenue.  In 1990, they found a vacant Masonic Temple in Homestead. After slowly renovating several floors of the building they were able to move their offices to that location where they conducted business  for 14 years. In 2004, MBM purchased and renovated a dilapidated metal building in Baldwin Borough, constructed an addition for offices and warehouse storage, and moved their offices once again.

There are currently 24 employees in the office and more than 100 carpenters and foreman in the field.  MBM's primary market is healthcare, however, they continue to diversify into other markets.

What is your proudest moment at MBM?
There have been so many times that I have been proud of what we have achieved, so I can't name just one. Looking back when we started MBM 30 years ago, as many start up businesses do, we were in a 12' X 15' room (below a hair salon). We didn't have a lot but worked hard and so many hours to prove we could do it. I guess the proudest moment is being blessed with working with all of our family and the extended family and friends MBM has given us. So in retrospect, I have had 30 years of proudest moments.

What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?
I have always enjoyed working with owners and architects to take a project from inception to completion. The most enjoyable projects are the most difficult projects that not a lot of people can do.

If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be?
A towel boy in Tahiti.

Best vacation you've been to?
The most memorable was hiking the Inca trail into Machu Picchu.

If you had to eat one meal, every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
My favorite meal is hot dogs but I'm pretty sure I couldn't eat that every day.

Top three life highlights?
Meeting Debby George, having our family, and all of the friends I have made.

What is the weirdest job you've ever had ?
I was 12 years old and I would clean out the whiskey bottle bins in the basement of a night club on Sunday morning after church. It usually took us about 4 hours. The pay was $1 dollar and all the ice cream I could eat.

What is the weirdest thing you've ever eaten?
The weirdest thing may have been Guinea Pig in Peru. The weirdest drink was Luwak coffee in Bali.

What is your personal philosophy?
Live and let live. Put your head down and keep going.

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?
I still like working with my hands. I love being outdoors doing almost anything that allows that to happen.

How do you define success?
Happiness.

Director of Plant Operations
St. Clair Hospital

MBM has 30 years of healthcare construction experience and it all started at St. Clair Hospital in 1988. St. Clair Hospital is an acute care 328-bed hospital located in Mt. Lebanon.  Steve began his career there in 1982 as an electrician, worked his way up the ranks and is currently the Director of Plant Operations.  He earned his Bachelor of Science from California State University, Bachelor of Science from Point Park University and Master of Science from St. Francis University.

Steve and his wife have been married almost 40 years. They have a son, a daughter and twin 19-month old granddaughters.  They also have an 11-year-old cat and two five-year-old black labs.  His hobbies and interests outside of work include raising his grandkids, raising black labs and motorcycle riding.

Steve first met Danny and Harry Brown at a renovation project where they were carpenters and he was the electrician.  They hit it off and have continued a good relationship to this day!

What has your experience been like working with MBM?
I really enjoy their skill levels, their attention to detail, their quick response, their fun-loving attitude towards work, and they always have the customer's best interest at heart.  They are extremely reliable, customer-oriented and are not afraid to think outside the box.

What projects with MBM and St. Clair Hospital have been most memorable?
One of the most memorable projects I worked with MBM on was the 6E Nursing Unit Addition. That unit was built on top of an existing unit that remained in service during the entire project. That received high acclaim from administration. Another project was during a fire situation at midnight one summer evening, MBM responded immediately to assist and found the source of the problem and corrected it.

Top three life highlights?
Getting married, having babies, and having grandkids.

Tell us three things most people don't know about you...
People would be surprised to know that I am a whiz at electrifying dollhouses, I am certified to teach firearm safety, and I love to grocery shop!
