Project Spotlights

Indiana Regional Medical Center

Behavioral Health Hospital

MBM Contracting was selected as the Construction Manager to build a state of the art 30,000 SF behavioral health hospital for IRMC. This hospital has the capacity for up to 44 adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Before the construction process started, security and door hardware were reviewed with the design team, owner and contractor, ensuring that the owner is receiving a product that tends to their needs. Once construction began, the project team coordinated closely with the hospital to manage site access, phasing, and safety protocols. The facility was constructed with specialized MEP installation methods to meet the unique requirements of behavioral health care. Anti-ligature plumbing fixtures, tamper-resistant lighting, and secure patient room features were installed with precision to ensure safety without compromising comfort.  Special attention was given to areas such as patient rooms, group therapy spaces, and nurse stations, where seamless coordination between trades was critical to deliver fully integrated safety and security systems.

Allegheny Valley Hospital Healing Garden

The new AVH Healing Garden was a 5,000 SF mostly open grass area transformed into a mixed space with both hardscapes and softscapes to boost mental wellness. Multiple gathering areas were added for employees and community members to congregate, decompress and enjoy the outdoor space. The garden brings the hospital and community together. The project faced some challenges including a tight three-month schedule with a goal to be opened by community day for the township. This repurposed space aligns with the hospitals efforts to beautify the campus and connect with their community.

What has your experience been like working with MBM on the AVH Healing Garden?

My experience working with MBM on the AVH Healing Garden project was exceptionally positive. I deeply appreciated the collaborative spirit and dedication demonstrated by the MBM team. Despite the inherent limitations we faced, particularly regarding funding, the partnership fostered a shared vision that ultimately allowed us to successfully bring the Healing Garden to fruition.

What were the biggest challenges on the AVH Healing Garden project?

One of the most significant challenges we encountered during the Healing Garden project was ensuring its visual impact would resonate both within the hospital and with the broader community. Our goal was to create not just a green space, but a truly impactful healing environment that would be recognized and valued. Overcoming budgetary constraints while still achieving this aesthetic and therapeutic vision required careful planning and innovative solutions.

How has the hospital staff, patients and community benefited from the Healing Garden?

The Healing Garden has brought numerous benefits to our hospital staff, patients, and the wider community. For the community, it serves as a powerful visual indication that Allegheny Valley Hospital is not only thriving but also actively investing in initiatives that enhance the patient experience and staff satisfaction. For our patients, it offers a tranquil oasis for respite and healing. And for our dedicated staff, it provides a serene space for breaks, contributing to their well-being and job satisfaction. It really symbolizes AVH's ongoing commitment to a holistic healing environment.

What are the next areas of focus at AVH?

Our primary area of focus at Allegheny Valley Hospital is the completion of our Inpatient Rehabilitation expansion. This is a critical project that will significantly enhance our capacity to provide specialized rehabilitative care. Beyond that, we are actively considering the development of an Outpatient Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Center, strategically located across from the Healing Garden.

Tell us three things most people don’t know about you…

I grew up in Aliquippa, was involved in musical theater (which played a significant role in my college and medical school admissions), and I've recently discovered a new passion for gardening.

Griffin Spacht

Safety Director

MBM Contracting

Griffin went to Slippery Rock University and graduated with a Safety Management Degree. He started with M.C. Dean right after graduation where he learned quite a lot about field work and being able to convert classroom topics into real life scenarios on site. In December he took a position here at MBM as the Safety Director. As Safety Director, he says he's learned about different fields that he wasn’t exposed to before and pairing that with past experiences has helped him tremendously. Griffin grew up in Erie, PA and comes from a family of nurses. His mom and dad are both nurses and his sister is going to college in the Fall to become a nurse. We are lucky that he chose a different path and is now part of the MBM team.

What aspect of being in safety do you like the most?

My favorite aspect of safety are the relationships that are made at each jobsite. Having a respectable relationship with employees allows for more understanding of the safety world which in turn makes my job more productive.

What do you like about working at MBM?

I think the camaraderie of the office space and being able to have a good work-life balance is my favorite part of working at MBM. You can truly tell everyone here cares.

What advice would you give to young professionals joining the construction industry?

Being a young professional myself I may not have all the answers needed. However, one thing I would say is to try and soak up as much information as possible in everything you do. As well as always ask questions that you are unsure of.

Tell us three things most people don’t know about you…

I really enjoy board games, I binge TV shows probably more often than needed, and I want to own my own business one day.

Cheers to 99 Years with Irene Brown

MBM Contracting was founded by Danny and Harry Brown, brothers and carpenters by trade. Their mother, Irene was their first office employee, coming out of her first retirement to help her sons launch MBM. After 30 years of dedication and hard work, Irene retired for the second time at the age of 90. The success of MBM is largely due to the strong foundation built by Danny, Harry and Irene. Unfortunately, Irene passed away in March but we will be forever grateful for our time with Irene and the legacy she has left behind. MBM is a family-first company because of Irene. Cheers to Irene!
