Project Spotlights

Sunshine Behavioral Health

Keystone Behavioral Health Retreat

This 36,700 SF project focused on renovating an existing substance abuse and behavioral health campus to restore vital community services following the facility’s closure. The primary challenge was completing the first phase within a 2½-month window to begin serving patients as quickly as possible. Renovation scope across the main building and ground floor included commissioning of existing AHUs and HVAC upgrades, electrical and lighting improvements, low voltage and cabling upgrades with system commissioning, door security retrofits with new fob readers, plumbing upgrades featuring a new grease interceptor and updated sinks throughout, new flooring, privacy walls in patient rooms, and fresh paint. Nurses' stations were added on multiple levels to support clinical operations. Level 1 received specialized attention with a conversion to ligature-resistant grilles, reconfigured shower areas, ligature-resistant materials at the sinks to conceal existing rough-ins, and new ligature-resistant light fixtures - all critical upgrades for a behavioral health environment.

Forbes Hospital OBGYN and Ortho

The Forbes Hospital OBGYN and Ortho projects consisted of renovations to two active healthcare spaces totaling approximately 9,300 SF. The OBGYN suite included a 7,400 SF refresh and renovation of the existing space, with the goal of improving functionality while updating finishes throughout the suite. To minimize disruption to staff and patients, the project was carefully completed across 19 phases, with off-hours work coordinated as needed to accommodate daily operations. The Ortho project included a 1,900 SF renovation to relocate the practice into a new space. This work was completed over a three-month duration and required detailed phasing to keep the project moving efficiently. The renovation was completed in three phases, with the final phase consisting of a new X-ray room. The X-ray room presented a unique coordination challenge, as design was still being finalized while earlier phases were already underway. To maintain the project schedule, materials were released before the plans were fully finalized, requiring close coordination between the team.

The Children's Institute Playground Ribbon Cutting

MBM was delighted to attend the Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh playground ribbon cutting on June 3rd. The 10- month playground renovation transformed an existing outdoor play area into a new, fully updated 21,000 SF playground designed to better serve students of all ages and abilities. The project included the demolition of the existing playground and construction of a new, more accessible outdoor environment focused on ADA accessibility, inclusive play, and improved functionality for children with a wide range of physical, behavioral, educational, and developmental needs. The project required careful coordination through site logistics, zoning variances, and multiple vendors to ensure all plans, equipment, and construction details aligned with the overall design intent. The result is a refreshed outdoor environment that reflects The Children’s Institute’s mission while providing students and families with a better space to play, grow, and connect. This very cool time-lapse drone video shows the full project from concept to completion.

Working with MBM on the Keystone Retreat Behavioral Health project has been an outstanding experience. Their team demonstrated professionalism, strong communication, and a commitment to delivering a high-quality facility that aligns with our mission of providing exceptional behavioral healthcare services. Superintendent, Al Palmer was one of the best contractors I have ever worked with. His leadership, responsiveness, and attention to detail helped ensure the project remained on track and met the high standards we envisioned for the facility.

What were the biggest challenges on this project?

The biggest challenges involved maintaining project timelines and ensuring smooth execution throughout the development process. As with any healthcare project, coordinating multiple moving parts while staying on schedule required constant communication, adaptability, and attention to detail. Despite these challenges, the team remained focused and committed to delivering a successful outcome.

What aspect of being a Project Manager do you like the most?

I enjoy working with different people to collaborate and make sure the projects get done efficiently and on time.

What do you like about working at MBM?

Working at MBM has provided me with the opportunity to take on a different role than I had previously been working in while being surrounded by many knowledgeable people who are providing me guidance along the way.

What advice would you give to young professionals joining the construction industry?

Construction can feel overwhelming, especially as a young professional with no experience. You may feel as though you need to learn every detail about the process right away, but the reality is that you will pick up pieces of knowledge over time. Until then, rely on the expertise around you to help.

What was your favorite vacation?

In 2025, I went to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and spent four days doing various outdoor activities. Running, hiking, white-water rafting, and visiting natural hot springs.

Favorite movie or book?

The Lord of the Rings Series, more specifically The Battle of the Five Armies or The Last Samurai.

Tell us a little bit about your family.

My parents grew up in Washington County and met in high school. My dad is a mechanical engineer who conducts mining research for the federal government. My mom is a registered nurse. My older brother, Ben, went to Slippery Rock with me and graduated from physical therapy school in 2025. My younger sister currently attends WVU and hopes to become a crime scene investigator.

Tell us three things most people don’t know about you…

I volunteer with my church’s youth group for the middle school students. I actively compete in jiu-jitsu competitions. My biggest fear is any open body of water, even though I’m a good swimmer.
