Message from the Chief
Dear Friends of the Miami Beach Police Department,

Welcome to the first of our new monthly newsletters. This is a new initiative by your Police Department to keep you informed and engaged as partners in keeping our city safe. This  newsletter is meant to be informative and fun, with crime prevention and traffic safety tips, discussions of current challenges we face, explanations of our newest initiatives, profiles on our officers and civilian employees and their recent successes, upcoming events,  etc.

To be a successful police agency, we need to work hard every day to connect with you, the citizens of our community. We need you to be our eyes and ears -- to alert us to any conditions that might jeopardize public safety. We also need you  to provide input and feedback on how we can deliver the best possible customer service. This newsletter is intended to share information about the services we provide, not only to fight crime and improve traffic safety, but  also to improve the quality of life in our city.

In addition to all the updates and crime prevention tips we will offer in each newsletter, either I or Deputy Chief Lauretta Hill will provide a brief message each month about a topic we think is particularly important. For this first newsletter, I simply write to welcome you to our publication. The men and women of the Miami Beach Police Department are superbly dedicated public servants, and I am proud to serve with them.

Thank you,

Chief Daniel Oates

MID BEACH

See Something, Say Something!

Whenever we do a community meeting or informal Q&A session, people often tell us that they are hesitant to call 911. Whether it's because they didn't think the situation warranted calling 911 or they didn't want to bother the police, many people are reluctant to use the system. Please, use the system! Let us assure you that calling in activity or behavior that you feel is unusual or out of place is not a burden; it's how we know what's going on. We rely on you to tell us. If it seems suspicious to you, it's worth talking with your neighbors and definitely worth reporting it to 911.

When calling 911, be prepared to give an accurate description of what is happening and where you are in relation to what is happening. There is a lot of information the call taker will ask of you. Answer to the best of your ability and be patient with him/her. They are gathering information about a situation they may be sending officers to, and that situation may be dangerous. If you don't know the answer to a particular question, it's okay to say you don't know. Don't think that because you don't have all the answers that you shouldn't call.

See something, say something! If you don't report it, officers can't respond. We can't stress enough; if it is suspicious to you, do not hesitate to call 911. It's okay to call. You're not bothering us.
