Superintendent's Newsletter

January 24, 2025

Dear MBUSD Parents and Community,

I hope this newsletter finds you well. In today’s issue, we highlight MBMS, honor the life of Ford Savela, and share details about Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi’s visit to Mira Costa.

Spotlight on MBMS (Special Thanks to Principal Luke Olesiuk)

The MBMS security team are some of the unsung heroes on the MBMS campus. They are individuals whose names won’t appear on a student’s class schedule, but they are nevertheless incredibly important to helping our campus run smoothly on a daily basis. Chris Gorlero, Krystle Leaupepe, and Steve Poirier are the names behind these familiar faces on campus, and they deserve recognition for all they do to help the students and staff at MBMS strive for excellence on a daily basis.

Krystle started working as a security staff member at MBMS in 2023. Prior to this position, Krystle has been an important part of the MBUSD family by working as an instructional assistant at MBMS as well as Grand View and Meadows for several years. Krystle takes pride in her work and really enjoys greeting both students and staff each morning as they enter campus (and always getting a positive reply back!).

Steve also began his position as a security staff member in 2023, and has worked at both MBMS and Grand View. Steve can be seen all around campus each day, supervising multiple areas during nutrition and lunch, assisting students to access the elevators when needed, and monitoring the gates to campus when students are off campus for events like PE’s cardio days. Steve finds joy in knowing that the work he is doing helps to keep everyone at MBMS safe.

Chris has been part of the security team the longest, working for the past six years at MBMS and previously dedicated six years to Mira Costa. Chris’ support on campus is truly second-to-none, and he always brings an attitude of “we will make it work!” when faced with a new problem or task around campus. The most fulfilling part of his job is when he is able to make a difference in the lives of the students at MBMS and to see them grow into greater individuals.

Staff Spotlight:  Susana Anton | Extended Day Program Supervisor

For more than 30 years, Susana Anton has been a part of the Manhattan Beach Unified School District, dedicating her career to enriching the lives of students and families. Susana’s journey with MBUSD began in 1993 and she says it has been both deeply rewarding and fulfilling. Throughout her tenure, Susana has worked in various roles within the District’s child care programs, including the Preschool and Extended Day Program (EDP). She has held positions as an instructional assistant, teacher, site lead, and currently serves as the Program Supervisor for EDP. She shared, “I simply love EDP and remain dedicated to delivering exceptional child care. Personally, having my two wonderful sons who attended and graduated from MBUSD, I was a witness to the high level of education this exceptional District delivers to its students.”

Susana’s career began when she was a stay-at-home mom cherishing time with her first son until he turned three. Through friends and family, she discovered the District’s Preschool and EDP (formerly the Child Development Center) and enrolled her son, marking the start of her professional journey. Beginning as an instructional assistant at the CDC, Susana quickly found her calling in education and has built a career she cherishes to this day.

Her favorite part of the job is visiting classrooms and interacting with students. Witnessing their excitement for learning and their growth inspires Susana daily, making every moment meaningful. She credits her sons as her greatest motivation, and having the opportunity to work in the District where they began their educational journeys has been an incredible experience. “Watching them grow, learn and develop, sparked a deep interest in supporting the education of young minds. I’m truly grateful for the opportunities I’ve had in education, I wouldn’t change this journey for anything,” said Susana.

Outside of work, she loves to read, travel, and spend quality time with her husband, two sons, and close friends.

Community Gathers to Honor the Life of Ford Savela

18-year-old Ford Savela was remembered by the community this week during a special memorial hosted by his family. The event brought together friends, family, MBUSD staff, City officials, Manhattan Beach Police Department (MBPD), and first responders, all united to honor Ford’s legacy and the positive impact he had on those around him.

Several of Ford’s teachers from Mira Costa High School spoke, reflecting on the remarkable individual he was. They expressed how grateful they were to have known him, describing him as a passionate learner, deeply intelligent, and destined to make a difference in the world. Ford’s love for the outdoors, which he often spoke about in class, was a defining part of his life. Ford was remembered as a giver and helped out others and the community in so many ways.

His elementary teachers from Grand View shared fond memories of him, recalling the ways he inspired those around him. They spoke about his ability to show others that no matter who you are, you have the power to make a difference.

A large group of Ford’s friends also spoke at the memorial sharing the unforgettable and favorite memories they had with him, painting a picture of his vibrant personality and kind spirit. Many highlighted his love for rock climbing and his commitment to community service, including his involvement with the Beach Cities Health District Youth Advisory Council. They described him as someone who always dreamed big and inspired those around him to do the same. His kindness, compassion, and generosity left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

The memorial was filled with live music, with songs from from the Goo Goo Dolls to John Lennon, a tribute to Ford’s love for music, and a touching reminder of the joy he brought to those around him. We continue to share our condolences to the Savela family and all of Ford’s loved ones. His legacy of kindness, passion, and community impact will continue to inspire all those who knew him.

E-Bike Parking Reminders

E-Bike Ordinance

We are urging all students who have a registered sticker on their bike through our e-bike safety program to please park and lock their bikes on campus. Last week, a bike locked off-campus near MBMS was stolen but was successfully recovered and returned to its owner, thanks to the efforts of the Manhattan Beach Police Department. The recovery was made possible in part because the student had a bike registration sticker from the bike safety course.

This incident emphasizes the value of participating in the bike safety program, which equips students with essential safety knowledge and provides registered stickers for identification. If your student rides an e-bike to school, but hasn’t taken an MBUSD e-bike safety course, we hope you will consider registering them for the course to ensure their bike is better protected. Additionally, the MBPD strongly recommends that all bikers secure their bikes using a sturdy, reliable lock.

We also want to remind our community that several City ordinances apply to bicycles and e-bikes. According to Manhattan Beach Municipal Code 3.01.020—Operation of bicycles, electric bicycles, and motorized bicycles—it is illegal to park against windows, parking meters, or on a sidewalk that obstructs sidewalk accessibility or passage. It also states that bicycles of any type should not be parked in a way that causes a hazard to pedestrians, traffic, or property.

Local law enforcement also emphasizes that bikers should avoid attaching bikes to posts, fences, or buildings. Please encourage your students to follow this ordinance and park their bikes according to the laws.

Our next course for MBMS and Mira Costa students is on February 22. Click here to register. For more information about our E-Bike Safety Program, please visit our website here

Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi Visits Mira Costa

As our District continues its efforts to support families affected by the recent wildfires, Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi visited Mira Costa to learn about the initiatives taking place on our campuses. During his visit, MCHS School Counselors Brittney Oystrick and Jennifer Wildenberg shared their experiences assisting newly enrolled students and highlighted some of the challenges these families are facing.

The roundtable discussion included Board President Wysh Weinstein, Board member Cathey Graves, MBUSD leadership, including Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Murakawa-Leopard, Director of Student Services, Kerry Riccio Aguero, MCHS Principal Dr. Huynh, and School Counselor Keshia Simmons. Topics ranged from transportation and mental health services to the process of transferring coursework from other schools to Mira Costa.

Mira Costa Link Crew leaders also joined the conversation, sharing their first-hand experiences on welcoming new students and families to campus. These students have been instrumental in providing tours and creating a sense of community for those transitioning to Mira Costa.

We are grateful to Assemblymember Muratsuchi for taking the time to visit and engage in a meaningful discussion about how we can best support our students and families during this challenging time.

Manhattan Beach Coordinating Council Honors MBUSD Students

The Manhattan Beach Coordinating Council continues its tradition of recognizing our students. MBUSD students from Grand View Elementary, MBMS, and Mira Costa were recognized this week. Hearing MBUSD teachers share their students' stories and highlight why they are deserving of this award is always so inspiring.

Ms. Glasgow shared, “He leads by example, showing us that being a good leader doesn't mean just taking charge, but means showing respect for everyone and encouraging others to do their best.”

She is incredibly disciplined, organized, and highly motivated,” said Ms. Burrows.

The next MBUSD student honored was Olive-Odette Rosenlund. MBMS Principal Luke Olesiuk shared the heartfelt nomination written by her teacher, Megan Mackey. She described Olive-Odette as one of the most genuine and resilient young individuals she has ever had the pleasure of teaching. She highlighted Olive-Odette’s ability to ask thoughtful questions and demonstrate strong critical thinking skills beyond the confines of the curriculum. Ms. Mackey said she is very proud of her.

Mira Costa junior Rachel Hang-Rothman was honored for her desire to learn. Teacher Lindsey Valbuena commended Rachel’s curiosity and willingness to overcome in her pursuit of success. Valbuena also shared that she is impressed by Rachel’s research projects in her AP Seminar class, as well as her empathy and ability to understand the impact of events on others.

Samantha and Asher’s art pieces focused on the importance of water and were selected from 1,200 entries. Their creative artwork has been published in the WRD 2025 Water Awareness Calendar. Screenagers: Elementary School Age Edition

Beach Cities Health District (BCHD) and South Bay Families Connected are partnering with MBUSD and other Beach Cities school districts to host community showings of the documentary “Screenagers: Elementary School Age Edition.” The movie addresses issues that elementary school-aged kids, parents, and educators face from smartwatches in class, unhooking from and monitoring video gaming, social media pressure, and youth exposure.

The screening gives parents/guardians an opportunity to learn about existing research, solutions, and other challenges around these topics.

The movie was created and directed by Delaney Ruston, a physician and film director, to describe growing up in a tech-saturated world where it is her opinion that a balance should be struck between screen time and screen-free time. The film’s perspective may be interesting for families who are contemplating how and when to introduce devices for children and teens. You can register here.
