August 2024

National Immunization Awareness Month

#ivax2protect

National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) is an annual event held each August. NIAM provides the opportunity to promote the importance and value of immunization across the lifespan.

The disruption in well-child visits and routine immunization during the COVID-19 pandemic has continued to affect routine immunizations for children and adolescents. While routine vaccination coverage has rebounded, it has not yet recovered among all groups. Our community plays an essential role by ensuring that children are up to date on all recommended vaccines. You can help by identifying families whose children have missed recommended vaccines and contacting them to schedule vaccine appointments.

CDC's Communication and Print Resources offer immunization advocates graphics to share on social media platforms and websites to raise awareness around the importance of staying up to date on recommended vaccines. Include #Ivax2Protect with your social media posts to amplify your messages.

Be on the lookout for #ivax2protect updates throughout August! If you have questions or are looking for specific resources for your practice, please contact Cynthia McReynolds (cmcreynolds@mcaap.org).

Please see the Resource Spotlight section of this newsletter for additional NIAM resources.

Vaccine Confidence Update

The Massachusetts Vaccine Confidence Project (MVCP) is a collaboration of the Immunization Division, Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH), the Massachusetts Adult Immunization Coalition (MAIC), and the Massachusetts Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics (MCAAP).

The MVCP’s mission is to increase vaccine confidence throughout Massachusetts to ensure that all residents are fully protected against serious, vaccine-preventable disease. This is accomplished through the development of educational activities and science-based resources and training materials for healthcare providers and the public, and collaboration with organizations which support immunization.

H5N1 Bird Flu and 2024-2024 Respiratory Illness Season Updates

Avian Influenza A (H5N1) Flu

CDC continues to monitor the multistate outbreak of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus, or "H5N1 bird flu," and posts a weekly update communicating its response activities. Click here to read the August 9 response update. The update notes that, "Since April 2024,13 human cases of avian influenza A(H5) virus infection have been reported in the United States. Four of these cases were associated with exposure to sick dairy cows and nine were associated with exposure to avian influenza A(H5N1) virus-infected poultry. Based on the information available at this time, CDC's current assessment is that the immediate risk to the general public from H5 bird flu remains low."

2024-2025 Respiratory Illness Season

In June, CDC recommended the updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccines and the updated 2024-2025 flu vaccines to protect against severe COVID-19 and flu this fall and winter.

CDC recommended that everyone ages 6 months and older receive an updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine to protect against the potentially serious outcomes of COVID-19 this fall and winter whether or not they have ever previously been vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine. Updated COVID-19 vaccines will be available from Moderna, Novavax, and Pfizer later this year. This recommendation will take effect as soon as the new vaccines are available.

CDC recommended that everyone 6 months of age and older, with rare exceptions, receive an updated 2024-2025 flu vaccine to reduce the risk of influenza and its potentially serious complications this fall and winter. CDC encourages providers to begin their influenza vaccination planning efforts now and to vaccinate patients as indicated once 2024-2025 influenza vaccines become available.

Updated 2024-2025 flu vaccines will all be trivalent and will protect against an H1N1, H3N2 and a B/Victoria lineage virus. The composition of this season’s vaccine compared to last has been updated with a new influenza A(H3N2) virus.

Ordering of state-supplied flu vaccine for the 2024-2024 Respiratory Season has opened in the MIIS. Click here to read the MDPH Vaccine Management Unit communication.

The complete COVID-19 and influenza recommendations will be published in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). The published recommendations are expected this month. Updates will be communicated as soon as they become available.

At its June 2024 meeting, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) confirmed that the original respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) recommendations, as published in 2023 in MMWR, apply for the 2024-2025 Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) season. These state that all infants are recommended to be protected by either maternal RSV vaccination or nirsevimab for the 2024-2025 RSV season.
