President's Message

Medija Shaska

Medija Shaska, FACHE, PMP

MCACHE President

Dear MCACHE Members,

Spring always brings a quiet sense of renewal—a gentle reminder that growth and new beginnings are all around us. This season, as we celebrated Mother's Day, I found myself especially reflective while marking a personal milestone: my daughter's graduation. It was a moment filled with pride and deep hope for the future. In a time when the world can feel uncertain, witnessing her step into this next chapter reminded me of the promise that comes with change, and the power of investing in growth, learning, and each other.

That same spirit of renewal and forward momentum is alive within our MCACHE community. From emerging leaders to seasoned professionals, we are focused on expanding access to meaningful professional development, deepening our community engagement, and creating space for authentic conversations about the future of healthcare. The months ahead are full of exciting opportunities to learn, lead, and connect—with highlights including thought-provoking discussions on AI and precision medicine, advancement support for those pursuing board certification, energizing networking events, and hands-on service experiences with partners like Camp Casey and Moonbeams for Sweet Dreams.

As we look ahead, we also remain committed to staying informed and adaptable in a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape. Recent news in Michigan reflects both urgent challenges and promising advances: finalized blood lead testing rules for children, strengthening opioid treatment capacities, and a response to rising cases of measles and whooping cough. Efforts to address persistent healthcare workforce shortages are also front and center—not only locally but across the country. These pressing issues remind us of the importance of our work as healthcare leaders and the need to remain engaged, educated, and connected.

Thank you for being an essential part of MCACHE—we are excited for what is ahead and grateful to navigate this journey with each of you.

With Gratitude,

Medija Shaska, FACHE, PMP

Regent's Message

Regent for Michigan and Northwest Ohio

Colleagues,

As the world outside awakens with vibrant colors and renewed energy, so too does a sense of hope and possibility blossom within our healthcare community. Spring is a powerful reminder of resilience, growth, and the cyclical nature of life—themes that resonate deeply with the work we do every day. The longer days mirror the tireless dedication you bring to your roles, often extending beyond the typical workday. The gentle warmth of the season can serve as a reminder of the compassion and care you provide, warming the lives of those in need. This spring, let us embrace the spirit of renewal and may it inspire us to:

** Cultivate Well-being: Just as we nurture the health of our patients, let us prioritize our own physical and mental well-being, finding moments for rejuvenation amidst the demands of our profession.

** Foster Growth and Innovation: Like the budding flowers reaching for sunlight, let us seek new knowledge, explore innovative approaches, and continue to grow both personally and professionally.

** Strengthen Connections: Spring often brings people together. Let us nurture our relationships with colleagues, patients, and our communities, recognizing the strength and support we find in connection.

** Embrace Hope and Possibility: The vibrant energy of spring reminds us that even after the longest winter, new beginnings are always possible. Let us carry this optimism into our work, fostering hope and resilience in those we serve.

Thank you for being the unwavering beacons of care and compassion in our communities. May this season of renewal bring you strength, inspiration, and a deep sense of purpose in the vital work you do. Let us step forward with the fresh energy of spring, dedicated to healing, growth, and the well-being of all.

National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th, Florence Nightingale's birthday.

Previous Programs and Events

Job Shadow Day during the month of February

By: Michael J. Hoeflein, PE, CHFM, MBA, FACHE

During the months of February and March, leaders from across the area participated in job shadow day giving students pursing careers in healthcare an opportunity to spend a day with a leader and see the inner workings of hospital operations. This incredible program is organized under the leadership of Angela DeLaere, MBA, FACHE from the MCACHE Student Activities Committee.

Amena Beslic, Director of Emergency Services at Corewell shared the day with Carmen, an undergraduate student at EMU. Carmen sat in on several meetings covering operational goal planning, budget planning and the daily executive check-in meeting. Carmen shared her experience really solidified her thoughts about how healthcare systems are very similar in the operational sense and barriers they face with budgeting and outside entities that affect the operations of the facilities.

Jenna Everett, CEO at Silver Pine Medical Group shared the day with a student named Danielle. Danielle was able to participate in multiple meetings exposing her to benefits administration, our data analytics and introducing a staffing to demand model. Here’s a few words of gratitude Danille shared with Jenna about her experience: “Your insights have been incredibly valuable, not only confirming that the ideas I have for improving my practice are achievable but also inspiring me with countless new ideas. I truly cannot thank you enough for that.”

I had the opportunity to spend the day with Aaliyah, a student from EMU. During our time together we attended an accreditation risk gap meeting looking at areas to improve operational compliance, participated in Environment of Care rounds on a med/surg unit, toured the buildings to understand the intake and flow of patients in a hospital and attended budget meetings.

Why would you encourage students to participate in job shadow day? Jenna Everett said it best: this is a wonderful opportunity for a student to be able to see how the education they are receiving is applied in a real-world setting. Even if the student is already working in the field, the shadow day, as it is designed, gives them insight into a role that they may aspire to grow into.

Implementation of Value Based Care: Enhancing Provider and Payor Partnerships

March 5, 2025

By: Erin Johnson

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

On March 5th, MCACHE members gathered at the Lyon Meadows Conference Center to hear an esteemed panel discuss the challenges, and benefits, that come with building and cultivating partnerships between providers and payors in the implementation of value-based care. Facilitated by Mark Herzog, FACHE, MHSA, panelists Lori Aronson and Courtland Keteyian, MD, MBA, MPH held a lively discussion that highlighted their expertise and lessons learned over their course of their careers. This timely event comes as the healthcare industry continues to evolve, with a transition from the focus on volume to value. With an emphasis on preventative care and addressing social determinants of health, value-based care models aim to reduce hospital readmissions, improve management of chronic disease, and, therefore, lower overall healthcare cost. While the panelists came from traditionally opposed perspectives, both emphasized the benefits of this on patient care and outcomes. As all agreed, for value-based care to succeed, providers and payors must work together in new and collaborative ways, and we look forward to seeing these relationships develop!

Paint, Pour & Connect: Networking and Navigating Your Career

March 21, 2025

By: Juneisha, Claire, and Jason and the MCACHE Professional Development & Networking Committee

On Friday, March 21, the MCACHE Professional Development & Networking committee hosted the Paint, Pour, and Connect event. We had 18 participants join us to understand the benefits of and common challenges to professional networking, engage with the expert speakers and fellow participants, and commit to next steps on their networking journey.

We were fortunate to learn from the expertise of Joseph Brown, DHA, CHDA, Chair of the Department of Allied Health & Health Information Management at Davenport University, and David Brooks, MHSA, FACHE, MCACHE Board Member and retired healthcare executive. Dr. Brown taught us the principles of being “DOPE” while networking:

      D = Be direct.

O = Be objective; that is, have a goal in mind.

      P = Be polite.

E = Execute on what you say you’ll do.

Dave shared with us a mix of personal experience and research on networking. He advised us to think about the role that you want a network contact to be for you: a coach, a mentor, or a sponsor – or some combination of the roles. Dave shared that the attributes of successful networkers are:

They have an eye on long-term relationships as colleagues and/or friends. The key is the long-term view.

      They cultivate a diverse network.

They strive to offer mutual benefit to their network contacts. It is not just a one-way relationship.

They are consistent with following up.

They put in the effort, are strategic, and are focused in their networking pursuits.

After the event, we shared a resource from the ACHE LinkedIn feed: an article about networking techniques by Adrian Parker, FACHE, and Khadija Moody, entitled Networking: The Hello BEFORE the Hello. We look forward to putting to practice these practical networking tips!

Stay tuned for more information on upcoming MCACHE events to support your professional development and networking!

Healthcare Workforce Challenges and State of the Industry (with Inforum) April 3, 2025

By: David Brooks

The Senior Director of Talent Initiatives from the Detroit Chamber of Commerce issued the challenge to the joint MCACHE and inFORUM program on the morning of April 3. Christi Taylor, challenged: “The solution is not to have more job fairs, the solution is to create net new talent in the industry.” She went on to say that no one sector of the community can solve the challenge alone. Healthcare leaders need to work with education and other industries to make sure there is enough talent in the overall pipeline.

Speaking to the Workforce Challenges and the State of Industry session hosted at Henry Ford Health, she described the Chamber’s 2023 strategic work from their “Regional Healthcare Talent Collaborative”. She presented that their three strategic priorities include K – 12 Pathways, Incumbent Worker Progression and Microcredentials. Using Wayne County as an example, she explained that there were 9,041job openings in 2023 and only 4,611 degree completions in all healthcare professions. This leaves a gap of 4,430.

Dean Ahmed Radan, from the University of Detroit Mercy’s College of Health Professions, followed up describing his school’s strategic focus on developing high quality healthcare professionals.  The school has not only grown the current clinical and administrative programs but has made the bold decision to bring new degrees including a Doctorate in Physical Therapy and a Doctor of Optometry to the community and the region. These are along with even further development in one of UDM’s long standing leadership in nursing including their new innovative Master’s Entry Advanced Generalist Nursing program.

Representing the host, Henry Ford Health, Kate Anderson, Vice President of Operations in the medical group, reviewed HFH’s workforce areas for focus and exploration. These include Optimize Workforce, Common EMR/Platform, Enhanced Roles and Workflows and System Entry Points. She reviewed the System’s scale and prioritization on talent development and workforce planning focusing on clinical providers, support teams, strengthening communication, enhancing roles and workflows, and promoting shared decision making.

With a view of the entire State, Trinity Health’s Chief Human Resources Officer for Michigan, Keyantee’ Davis, facilitated the three speakers as an expert panel. She brought forward questions both from those on-line as well as from the in-person audience. A clear theme emerged – we all need to change the image of Southeast Michigan as a healthcare career destination as we are in other fields and industries.  The participants left commenting about how productive and engaging the format and the content was in the program. And appreciated the collaboration of the sponsors MCACHE and inFORUM.

BGSU Public & Allied Health Symposium | Tackling Infectious Diseases Together April 3, 2025

By: Joesph J. Cafferty, LISW, MSW, FACHE U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs On April 3, public health and other healthcare leaders flocked to the beautiful campus of Bowling Green State University to hear Dr. Nikki Romanik, Distinguished Senior Fellow for Global Health & Security from Brown University speak on how to best prepare for the next pandemic. Dr. Romanik relayed her experiences during COVID as the Special Assistant for the President, Deputy Director, and Chief of Staff Office of Pandemic Preparedness and Response (OPPR) at the White House. Her witty use of nursery rhymes to demonstrate the cultural impact of public health disasters was well received by the sold-out crowd. Following the key-note speech, attendees chose a breakout session to continue their learning into the afternoon. MCACHE member, Erin Johnson attended the session focused on public health concerns for the justice involved community. Overall, it was a great event and an even better opportunity to network with members (and non-members) in the southern part of our catchment area!
