MCAN News and Meeting Reminder
Your Latest MCAN Updates
Our Moonshot Community Action Network (MCAN) is a professional learning community working collaboratively in support of our Moonshot Moment goal - to ensure that children are ready for kindergarten and that 90% of our children are reading on grade level by the end of third grade!

Our framing question is:
"What does it take for IRC's community leaders to operate as a high-performing team such that we lead the way, are stronger together, inspired and unstoppable in taking a stand for children and thereby fueling our community's economic vitality?"

MCAN CHALLENGE: What's your Moonshot story in 350-words or less?

T his is our opportunity to share the stories of our Moonshot Community as we apply for another Pacesetter award from the Campaign for Grade Level Reading! Stories due March 27 please.

Hint - The stories you submit will be a great addition to share with your own constituents, added to your website and promoted on your social media sites. It's a win-win-win.

The stories can be from the past few years, following this 350-words or less format:

  • Problem statement (50 words)
  • What problem or challenge does your story address - what is your observable progress? (100 words)
  • The Story behind the story (200 words) explaining why it worked, who was involved, what exceeded your expectations or fell short, and key take aways.

We encourage every MCAN member to submit at least one story for the Pacesetter application. Please send stories to Marie O'Brien, mobrien@thelearningalliance.org , by March 27, 2020.

The What’s Working Community Challenge (WWCC) has been designed to elicit and support the participation of all GLR communities. The CGLR expects that WWCC will uncover lessons and insights that are as useful and enlightening to the communities telling the story as to those with which the stories are shared. While the best documented stories will be referred for Pacesetter Recognition, every story submitted will be cataloged and shared with the GLR Network as a whole via CLIP (Community Learning for Impact and Improvement Platform), at  CLIPglr.org .

Please contact MCAN Member, Marie O'Brien, to suggest or submit a story that we may share with the Campaign.

2020 SPRING BOOK DRIVE: It's that time of year! Our Moonshot Reading Captains are collecting gently used children's books to deliver to children during the summer months.

-Will you share the Book Drive message?

Recap of the February 26, 2020 Meeting
February 26, 2020 MCAN Recap:

“Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.”   — Abigail Adams

* We began the meeting with the Huddle, welcomed new members, and shared and celebrated the work of our MCAN Members.

* Following the update of the County Commissioners’ workshop about the Children’s Trust, Dr. Moore was present and spoke to MCAN members regarding the renewal of the School District’s $9 million bond referendum that will go before the voters either during the Primary election in August or the General Election in November. Many MCAN members spoke of the importance of both the Children’s Trust and School District referendum renewal. Effective and clear marketing was discussed as important, once all relevant information was available.

* Jessica Schmitt, Executive Director of Literacy Services of IRC and a member of the MCAN Leadership Council, led the group through our professional development exercise to review and discuss the article : " This Is How Scandinavia Got Great: The power of educating the whole person."

"Bildung is devised to change the way students see the world. It is devised to help them understand complex systems and see the relations between things — between self and society, between a community of relationships in a family and a town."
