Spotlight: VonCommon Studios

Nestled in an unsuspecting corner at Wyoming and Johnson streets, you may notice a little door in a string of warehouses with a blue sandwich board nearby, ushering you inside to  VonCommon Studios .

You're standing in Missoula's distinct artist collective, VonCommon, which was founded in 2010 as a place for local artists to have affordable studio space in a supportive and collaborative community. 

First Night Missoula is a community festival celebrating the arts in Missoula. We are currently seeking proposals for creative projects and performances to take place in venues throughout Missoula on December 31, 2016.

First night will provide funding, venue space, tech support, and marketing for your creative project or performance. Tell us what you want to see in your community festival and how you plan to make it happen by applying  online here.

Bill Bowers  speechLess:
A Fundraiser for the Next Step Prep Scholarship Fund

Bill Bowers returns to Missoula for a one-of-a kind evening of performance magic with speechLess - Stories With and Without Words, Tuesday evening, June 28, at 7:30pm at the MCT Center for the Performing Arts. Combined with an easy storytelling charm, a cross between Garrison Keillor and David Sedaris, his show, subtitled Stories With and Without Words, is sure to delight. 
This performance is being presented by MCT's Next Step Prep (NSP), with proceeds from the show benefiting the Next Step Prep scholarship fund . Purchase tickets  online , or call 406-728-7529.

Hero Sound Project at ZACC

Thursdays in June  |  6 - 8 PM  |  Free
The Zootown Arts Community Center hosts the Hero Sound Project, a drop-in music class for veterans. No music experience is required.  We have the instruments and minimal instruction to get together and create music in community. 

Book Signing at Fact & Fiction Books Downtown

Summer Star-Gazing at the Planetarium

The University of Montana Department of Physics and Astronomy invites the public to its summer planetarium shows in the Payne Family Native American Center Star Gazing Room this May through August. T ickets and showtimes are limited. Shows generally sell out far in advance and are not available the night of the show. Purchase your tickets online here.
Missoula City Band Free Summer Concert Series at Bonner Park

Missoula City Band's open-air c oncerts are on each Wednesday evening at the Bonner Park Band Shell (corner of Ronald & Hastings Streets) at 8 PM, June 22 - August 12. This community service is provided by the generous support of the City of Missoula, hundred of willing musicians and supporters, and YOU!

Summer Camps Available for Young Writers!

The Missoula Writing Collaborative is offering a summer writing camp for young writers ages 8-14. Words with Wings Summer Camp is a camp where children can write, create, and explore Missoula. From camp games to field trips to writing classes with professional writers, Words with Wings fosters creativity and community in our young writers. Two sessions: July 11-15 and July 18-22, with half or full day options.
For the first time, The Missoula Writing Collaborative is offering High School Summer Writing Workshops. Work closely with professional writers, learning about craft and tricks of the trade and have the chance to improve your writing. We're offering Fiction July 11-15, Songwriting July 11-15, and Poetry and Fiction July 18-22. If you have something to say, come turn it into song, poetry, or prose with our writers!

The Clay Studio of Missoula Offers Summer Workshops

Opening Reception for Killdeer Artisans' Guild on July 2nd

Killdeer Artisans' Guild presents a new selection of works from established and emerging area artists, with opening reception Saturday, July 2, 12-2 PM, at Hangin' Art Gallery & Café in Arlee.

This coincides with the Arlee Celebration Powwow, so come prepared for a full day in Arlee! Discover a fascinating variety of art that is rooted in place and local culture. We have something for everyone including paintings, sculpture, photography, fiber arts, jewelry, ceramics and woodworking.

Radius Unveils New Exhibition

Radius Gallery is delighted to present new works by Michael Haykin, Dana Boussard, and Dale Livezey, three highly accomplished painters. Exhibition dates: June 17 - July 23.

MMAC Summer Exhibitions & Events

The Montana Museum of Art & Culture at the University of Montana carved out time this summer and space in its galleries for engravings by Frederic Remington, as well as 51 contemporary artists from around the world.

"Dramatic Moments: Frederick Remington's Early Engravings, 1882-1895" and "The Wood Engravers' Network Triennial Exhibition" will be on display from Thursday, June 9, to Saturday, Sept. 17, in the Meloy and Paxson galleries in UM's Performing Arts and Radio/Television Center.

Free docent tours: July 7 and August 5 at 5 PM
Free public lecture: "Remington's Formative Years," by art collector and educator Lee Silliman, September 8 from 7 - 8:30 PM

VonCommon Vondays

VonCommon Art Studios in partnership with the Roxy Theater presents a monthly series called 'VonCommon Vondays,' launching July 11th. This series curated by VonCommon will showcase the work of local, regional, and national media artists as well as films and documentaries about art, artists, and art movements.
Come join us for our inaugural event at the Roxy on Monday July 11th at 8pm for an evening of shorts by local media artists, including Bat Honey, TheaTerror, Caitlin Hofmeister, Ann Szalda-Petree, Jenny Larson, and more.

Singapore Luncheon Put on by Montana World Affairs Council in Helena

The Council invites you to join Singapore's Ambassador Ashok Mirpuri in Helena for a luncheon event where he will address the United States involvement in the Asia Pacific region from Singapore's perspective. A light lunch will be served. This event takes place on June 28 from 12 - 1:30 PM at  Best Western Premier Helena Great Northern Hotel, 835 Great Northern Blvd, Helena, MT.  The event is $10 for members and $20 for nonmembers. Empowerment Through Performance Workshop for Teens

Share Your Voice Foundation offers scholarships to local teens for this summer's Empowerment through Performance Workshop.  The Share Your Voice Foundation, an organization that believes in the transformative merits of the arts to empower individuals, is offering scholarships to Flathead Valley teenagers to attend a week-long creative leadership workshop.

Scholarships are available to teens ages 13 to 17 to attend the Empowerment through Performance Workshop, an innovative program designed to build confidence and creative leadership skills through arts-based curriculum. The workshop will take place July 25-30 at the Grange Hall, culminating in a performance on July 30 at Stillwater Landing.

Carbon County Arts Guild's Upcoming Events

43rd Art in the Beartooths Auction
Artwork from more that 50 guild artists will be showcased in the guild's main gallery beginning July 2nd and bidding begins. The main event is held on July 9th at Lions Park. Starting at 9:30 AM, observe guild artists paint live around the park until 2 PM. Entertainment begins at 4 PM, followed by the auction at 6 PM.

Purchase your tickets today by calling the guild at 406-446-1370. Tickets are $60/person. All proceeds from 43rd  Art in the Beartooths will be used for preservation of the historic depot building, to continue the arts and cultural programs hosted by the Guild, and fund the Guild's scholarship fund.

Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers Needed for Sunday Streets Missoula!

Sunday Streets Missoula is looking for volunteers on July 17. Sunday Streets Missoula is an Open Streets initiative where Higgins Avenue (from the XXXs to 5th street) is temporarily closed to cars, and open for people to enjoy the public space.  Volunteer registration is available online here.  Volunteers are provided lunch, an exclusive t-shirt, and a free ice cream coupon. Upcoming Choral Festival in Missoula Needs Volunteers and Host Families! 

The International Choral Festival takes place in Missoula next month, July 13-16. 

The festival is in need of about 15 - 20 host families to sign up for the 2016 International Choral Festival. This will give all visiting choir guests a comfortable place to stay. Hosting is an extremely rewarding experience and is absolutely the best way to appreciate the cultural differences from our foreign guests! To sign up, please fill out our host application form online. If you have any questions about housing please contact Janet Palmer at 274-0500.

The International Choral Festival runs smoothly with the help of our many volunteers. Our jobs range from sit-down work to equipment hefting. Volunteer applications are available online. An 18-Year-Old's Painting Is Now In The Met, Because Dreams Do Come True

Cliffannie Forrester is a wunderkind.  At 18 years old, the senior at the High School of Art and Design already has a piece of her artwork in the  Metropolitan Museum of Art  in Manhattan, New York. 

The oil-painted piece is titled, "Uganda," and entered into the world-renowned museum after it was selected as a winning piece in the scholarship competition P.S. Art 2016: Celebrating the Creative Spirit of NYC Kids. It is on view now at the Met until October 23, 2016, and will also be featured on a Times Square billboard from June 22 to June 26. Read on...
