Young Adult Opportunities

Two exciting opportunities are ahead for MCC's Young Adults. These events are different from each other, and participating in both gives young adults a chance to explore their own path in MCC and develop connections and plan ways to expand the collective ministry of Young Adults across MCC. Come with enthusiasm and ideas. Leave equipped to bring your dreams to life.

Young Adult Gathering 2014

The Young Adult Gathering is for young adults and is led by young adults. This year's retreat will be an experience of meeting and connecting with young adult peers, having spirited discussions, and working on strategies for empowering MCC's young adults in their home churches and in MCCs around the world.

Young Adult Leadership Mentoring Retreat 2014

The Young Adult Leadership Mentoring Retreat is an opportunity to learn from faculty that includes denominational leaders and staff who will provide participants with an opportunity for discernment about improving leadership skills in an MCC global context. The program includes a small group experience in which you will participate with colleagues and faculty in a "circle of trust" as you design your own plan for improving your leadership skills and abilities.

TRANSITIONS

(Photo from
Rev. Brad Wishon's facebook page)
Rev. Brad Wishon died unexpectedly in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, on 14 June. He was in his early 50s, and the cause is still unknown. While he had been feeling ill, he had attended MCC the Sunday before.

Brad served as MCC clergy from 1990 to 2009 and returned to serve as Consulting Pastor at MCC Phoenix in 2012 and 2013.

Brad is survived by his partner of 3 years, Andy Hollingsworth, and two sisters. Brad was an amazing man in many ways, most of all for being the sole caregiver for over 30 years for his sister Wanda, who is both blind and deaf.

The Memorial Service was 12 July at Church of the Beatitudes UCC, where MCC Phoenix meets. A Memorial Fund has been established to aid in the care of his sister and to help cover final expenses.

"Brad's infectious smile, enthusiasm, faith, and friendship will be deeply missed." -- Rev. Elder Arlene Ackerman

"Brad had a sweet spirit and a servant's heart. He loved the message of MCC and was passionate about Jesus and justice. He loved bylaws and was very vocal about his opinions on them, but most of all, he loved people. His devotion to his sister, and to those in his care as a pastor, will continue to have a profound impact." -- Rev. Elder Dr. Nancy Wilson

LEADERSHIP PULSE

REVM group, Estonia (May 2014)

Rev. Elder Dr. Mona West, Rev. Jim Mulcahy, and Florin Buhuceanu were faculty for a REVM program in Tallinn, Estonia, 26-28 May. Twelve people from Estonia, Russia, Moldova, Romania, and Finland participated. At the end of the program, three people were received into virtual membership in MCC, and three LGBT Religious groups indicated interest in affiliating with MCC.

The REVM was held in conjunction with the European Forum of LGBT Christian Groups' annual conference. At the conference, Rev. West presented a workshop on LGBT Theology and participated in a panel discussion on LGBT rights as human rights. Rev. Pat Bumgardner and Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes were also present and participated in the formation of an advocacy group for the Forum. Rev. Sharon Ferguson, pastor of MCC North London, was elected the co-president of the Forum.

MCC's presence at these events was significant, especially for those people from countries where it is still not safe to be "out." In the group photo for the REVM, three people had to face away from the camera. This REVM was the first time activists from Eastern Europe were able to be together for a sustained period of training and networking, which was a powerful encouragement to many who do this work in fear and isolation.
