Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. -Psalm 46:10 (NRSV)
Stillness
It seems there are two ways in which God frequently speaks to us - or at least to me.
There are times it feels as if God is speaking to me by whacking me in the face with a two-by-four. This is usually when I,
in my pride and hubris, decide to do what I'm going to do and not take time to listen.
Then there are the still moments, the quiet moments, when seconds become hours and we are able to just be and experience this gift of life in the moment, to just be present to the world and the quiet voice of our spirit. This is when God's voice is loudest and surest, whispering to our souls and allowing to us to see the paths that have been laid before us.
These moments can be a challenge in a world that demands action and wants it quickly, but sometimes we need to resist the tides and just be still. A popular song has the refrain "Taking steps is easy, standing still is hard" - and it can be, especially when it feels as if fear and doubt are closing in all around us and we cannot see which way to turn. This is when we must stand still, be still and know that God is.
