Can We Talk? ... Really, Can We Talk?
Seeking Understanding and Common Ground: Black and Jewish Relations in South Florida.
On January 24, MCCJ partnered with GableStage to host another edition of the interactive series Can We Talk? This time, the conversation addressed black and Jewish relations in South Florida.
Six panelists courageously took on the important conversation as they attempted to go back to the basics in Seeking Understanding and Common Ground: Black and Jewish Relations in South Florida. The panel was comprised of Monique Hayes, Partner at DGIM Law, Dr. Guerda Nicolas, UM Professor at the Department of Educational and Psychological Studies and School of Education and Human Development, Mojdeh “Moj” Khagan Danial, Jewish Community Relations Council at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, Brian Siegal Regional Director, American Jewish Committee Miami & Broward, and Chris Lomax, Founder, and Managing Attorney at Lomax Legal. It was moderated by Matthew Beatty, Vice President, and Chief Operating Officer at The Carrie Meek Foundation.

New Hires
Say hello to Jordan Pratts, our new VISTA Program Coordinator, Ruby Lyas, RRT, our new VISTA Community Engagement Coordinator, and Kathryn Landry, M.A., our new VISTA Outreach Coordinator.

My name is Jordan Pratts! I was born and raised in Miami Gardens and graduated from Dr. Michael M Krop Senior High School. For as long as I can remember I have been inspired to help the youth of Miami. Whether it was LGBTQ+ activism in high school, or mental health awareness for students, I have always been motivated to help students in their journey.
As a peer counselor at Camp MetroTown last year, I was able to help students be comfortable with who they are and teach them valuable leadership skills in a diverse environment. Through MetroTown, we were able to give students an escape from the pressures and challenges they experience in daily life and teach them skills to help them succeed. My wish is that those who attend MetroTown will find community in their peers, learn something that will help them achieve their greatest potential, and help people around them. I am studying Social Work at Miami Dade College North Campus, and plan on transferring to Florida International University to obtain my bachelor's degree!

Hi! I'm Ruby Lyas. I have a passion for working with those in need. I have committed this year of service to MCCJ to support the Clergy Dialogue program, alongside co-chairs Rev. Tom Capo and Jeanette Smith, and expand the impact of other MCCJ programs in the community.
My ultimate career goal is to work within public health to increase equity for maternal health, environmental health, and access to care. When I am not working, I can be found on an adventure with my daughter, traveling, or trying foods from around the world.
I am currently enrolled at Florida International University, where I am earning a master's degree in public health, with a concentration in Maternal Child Health. Since enrolling, I have worked with the Tennessee Department of Health as a Title V Intern on their Emergency Preparedness and Readiness for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs and the Power Dependent Devices task force. My time with MCCJ is just one more way that I have chosen to give back and serve our community.

Hello, I'm Kathryn Landry! I hail from a tiny town in the Ozark mountains of Arkansas, and by tiny I mean tiny; we have just 2000 people! As wonderful and lovely as my little mountain home was, it couldn’t keep my wandering spirit and thirst for knowledge within its borders. Eventually, I saved up enough to go to college in Anchorage, Alaska where I gained my B.S. in anthropology. After graduating, I worked for the military for a few years setting up training simulations with Iraq and Afghanistan nationals before moving to Dandong, China, a city on the border of North Korea, where I lived for five years. It was a life-changing experience that motivated me to switch professions and attend college in Miami, Florida to pursue a degree in clinical mental health. One day, I will aid in the effort to make mental health more accessible without negatively impacting the cultures we bring mental health care. For that reason, I am honored to serve a second Americorps term on MCCJ's team, serving every day to help those who need it most learn how to respect and engage with others as I am always thinking globally, acting locally! | | | |
