Bernard Amadei Awarded Honorary Doctorate

The Israeli Institute of Technology, known as the Technion, awarded Mortenson Center co-Director Dr. Amadei his sixth honorary Doctorate degree this June.  Check out the You Tube Video.
Another Major Fellowship for Shaye Palagi!

In addition to her NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, Shaye has won the 2017 USAID/OFDA Graduate Student Fellowship in Humanitarian Shelter and Settlements for Permanent Relocation and Implications for Humanitarians. The award will help fund her travel, local translation & support her research in ways that aren't covered by the NSF GRF. In addition, this will help make her findings well known amongst the Humanitarian Shelter working groups! Congratulations Shaye! (This makes two years in a row that Dr. Javernick-Will's PhD students have won this prestigious international award.)
Humanitarian Response and Disaster Management Course 

Dr. Carlo Salvinelli will be offering  Humanitarian Response and Disaster Management  this fall. The course will be scheduled on Tues/Thurs at 12:30 to 1:45 pm will be available on campus and via distance education sections (where students "attend" class from off-campus), and will be available at graduate (CVEN 5837) and undergraduate (CVEN 4837) levels.

The course will give an overview of the main principles, standards, and key stakeholders involved in humanitarian response and will analyze the different phases of disaster and crisis managment. MCEDC Students at the InterAction's Stakeholders Conference

Mortenson Center PhD students Aaron Opdyke and Shaye Palagi represented CU Boulder at the Shelter and Settlements Conference hosted by InterAction in Washington, DC in June 2017.  This conference brought together humanitarian shelter stakeholders to discuss how to make the settlements approach a reality in practice, build consensus, and produce an action-oriented plan. Opdyke presented an overview of the future research agenda required for the settlements approach and discussed changes required in humanitarian institutional financing. Palagi brought forward lessons to the group from her research in the Philippines on post-disaster relocation and holistic risk reduction.

MCEDC Presentation at the UN STI Forum 2017

Once again, students from the Mortenson Center represented the program at the United Nations' Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum).  This year, PhD students Nick Valcourt and David Zelinka presented on  Embracing Complexity:  Innovative Systems Science-based Tools for Guiding Sustainable                                                                 Development Policy .
Online Course Available
USAID/OFDA Shelter And Settlements Training Course

This course introduces the basics of humanitarian community shelter and settlements (S&S) activities, including some history and trends related to the sector, best practices in assessments and programming strategy, basic shelter responses, the relationship between shelter and its context (settlements), and how to promote the recovery of affected settlements. Global Science, Technology and Innovation Conference

October 23-25, 2017 in  Brussels, Belgium

Earn a chance to have your expenses paid to attend the the Global Science, Technology and Innovation Conference by participating in the G-STIC 2017 Student & Research Challenges. These are launched to encourage students, PhD students, and junior researchers worldwide to come up with original and innovative ideas on new technological solutions that hold great potential for achieving the SDGs. Check out the Youth Engagement Challenge website for more information. Submissions are due on July 31, 2017.
SPHERE Handbook Revision Workshop

September 12, 2017 4:00pm to 6:00pm
@ the Posner Center in  Denver, Colorado

The Sphere Handbook is one of the most widely known and internationally recognized sets of common principles and universal minimum standards in humanitarian response. This workshop, hosted by MCEDC, will provide a forum for humanitarian practitioners and academics to provide input for the 2018 revised Sphere Handbook and standards. You can also join via web conferencing. Registration is open.

Remember that the Mortenson Center now offers travel funds to students who present EDC-relevant work at conferences and to students who are conducting EDC-relevant research for their MS thesis or PhD dissertation. Doctoral Fellowship, Joint Centre for Disaster Research

A PhD research scholarship is available in a non-traditional sources of data (i.e. social media) for impact modelling and evaluation of disaster events. The Joint Centre for Disaster Research (JCDR) is awarding a 3-year PhD Scholarship for late 2017 - 2020. The scholarship is available to the students of all nationalities.
