PRINCIPAL PIC OF THE WEEK

Mrs. Swafford's 8th grade ELA class created sugar skulls to represent a character from the novel they'd read and then had to justify how/why the elements of the skull represent that character. In order to do so, they had to analyze how particular lines of dialogue or incidents in a story or drama propel the action, reveal aspects of a character, or provoke a decision.

MCMS Student Book Review
Ava Gideon
recommends
Thornhill
by Pam Smy
7th grader, Ava Gideon, recommends this book to her friends for a few reasons. This book at first didn't really spike her interest, but she saw that it had pictures & decided it would probably be easy and a lot of points toward her AR goal. However, she says, "listen to me when I tell you this book is so much more." This book is about children in an orphanage with the main character, Mary, writing in her diary explaining everything about herself and what is happening at the orphanage. She is bullied by another girl in the orphanage and does do some very bad things. Then the ending is completely unexpected. There's also a large section of pictures with no words."Oh, and by the way, the pictures and the story don't go together. The story is in 1982, and the pictures are 2017." The pictures seem to be looking into the future but are still connected to the orphanage. "While reading, everything will start to make sense, but if you don't pay attention when reading, you'll get lost." ThornHill can be described as a type of horror, drama and has definitely become one of her favorites.
Ava gives this book a 5 out of 5!

Dreamy Autumn Scenery
As I sit on a bench in this park today,
It is so cold even the ice cubes go indoors for warmth.
Yet as I sit here in the icy cold watching the trees decay,
Some people would dare call me a ha’p’orth.
Yet they don’t grasp the exciting emptiness of the scene,
For all they could see was a mere drop in the ocean.
They have not looked long enough to get all they could glean,
And they feel not what I feel and see not my emotions.
As the trees waved at me while dancing in the wind,
I could hear the crunch of leaves that lay on the ground.
The wind made even the largest trees bend.
The leaves piled up day after day creating large piles all around.
|
|
As I sat in that frigid fall forest I wonder,
Why wouldn't the falling leaves leave me alone?
A branch fell off of a tree and hit the ground breaking into sunder.
I have sat on this bench in the park for an amount of time unknown.
As they tried to get me to leave they realized it was an uphill battle they were fighting,
For this scenery was a picture hand crafted by a god.
I finally got them to sit with me to watch the scene that was so delighting,
Yet as I woke, I sadly remembered it was all a facade.
I woke in the hospital where I stay,
Like a man in jail day and night.
But soon I'll go to the man to whom I pray,
And then everything will be alright.

Sounds of birds outside your window,
Pouring into your house,
Ringing in your ear while you sleep.
Ideas of waking us and seeing flowers outside.
Nothing is more wonderful than spring.
Get ready for all the wonderful days,
Imagine the sun,
Smiling down on your while playing outside.
How beautiful spring is.
Everywhere there are flowers,
Ready for Easter day…Hunting eggs and getting candy.
Everyone is so glad Spring is here.

Summer is getting closer by the day
Pollen is all over the place and is terrible
Running outside is pleasant in the warm air
Ice will now melt in my cup when I set it down
Not having to wear a jacket every morning
Gods plants blooming
Immense amounts of flowers cover the fields
Spring showers
Here at last spring has arrived
Easter eggs hidden with treats and money
Rabbits jumping along the wood lines
Exciting new offspring of animals to see.

Spring has come to wake the earth,
New life bursts forth with each birth.
Blossoms bloom and birds take flight,
A symphony of sounds fills the night.
The sun shines bright and raindrops fall,
Nature's canvas painted with green and all.
Days grow longer, skies turn blue,
A sight so awe-inspiring and true.
The air is filled with scents so sweet,
As springtime's magic fills the street.
A time to shed off winter's gloom,
Embrace the warmth and let life bloom.

New 2023-2024 Bell Schedule for Monroe County Middle School
April 13, 2023 - Beginning in August 2023, Monroe County Middle School students will have new arrival and dismissal times. Classes at the middle school will begin at 8 a.m. Dismissal will take place at 3 p.m. This change will help alleviate bus traffic congestion and allow more space for future growth.
Transportation Director Jake Davis says, “We have run out of space to safely add additional buses to our loading areas at Monroe County Middle School and Mary Persons High School. As we continue to anticipate the need for growth, we have to address that now.”
Aligning the times at MPHS and MCMS will also allow Monroe County Schools to station buses simultaneously at both schools, allowing them to begin their routes sooner, while also accommodating the large number of student athletes needed to transfer from one campus to the other.
More information about the change will be released as we get closer to the start of the school year.

IMPORTANT ATTENDANCE REMINDERS
It has come to our attention that there is some confusion about the requirements needed to document student absences at MCMS. Please be aware of the following excerpts from our MCMS Student Handbook-School Attendance Policy:
“Upon returning after an absence, a student should bring a note from the parent or doctor.”
“Students who desire to document an absence shall present a written excuse signed by a parent or guardian within three (3) school days of returning to school. Documentation may not be sent by Fax, email, or telephone."

"The end of the school year is approaching, and students cannot wait until summer vacation...However, parents want to make sure their children don’t forget everything they learned over the school year once their brains turn off school mode and turn on their summer vacation mode."
- Summer is a time for play and relaxation from school work for kids. There are so many options that parents can choose from in order to make sure their kids stay active and engaged in some type of academia. Family engagement can most definitely come from participating in educational activities. From creating clubs, to using educational apps together, families will create life long memories while teaching their kids the importance of education and families.
