The MCMS football team captured its second consecutive league championship with a 14-8 victory over rival Upson Lee on Monday. It’s the third consecutive year that the two teams have met in the title game. Upson took the victory in overtime in 2020, Monroe won last year 14-6. This time, the fans at Dan Pitts Stadium got their money’s worth. There were plenty of offensive and defensive highlights with a little fireworks mixed in there.
Upson got the ball to start the game and promptly marched down the field on the normally stout Bulldog defense. The Knights were able to score on a 4 play 75 yard drive and add the 2 point conversion for an early 8-0 lead.
The Bulldogs answered almost immediately. After a 5-yard run by Ladarian Zellner, Singleton faked to Zellner and hit a wide open Isaiah Hendricks in the backside flats. Hendricks outran everyone for a 70-yard touchdown. The Bulldogs evened the game at 8 when Hagan Bailey threw to Grayson Bennett out of the Bulldogs’ swinging gate conversion play. The teams traded possessions for the rest of the 1st quarter.
The Bulldogs were able to take the lead in the second quarter when Singleton faked to Zellner and bootlegged out. He then whipped back around to find a wide open Zellner running down the sideline. The pass hit him in stride and Zellner did the rest, taking it in for a 60-yard touchdown. The 2-point conversion failed but the Dogs held a 14-8 lead.
Later in the quarter tempers flared after a hard Upson tackle on a Bulldog player. A scuffle ensued and Upson players and coaches came running on the field in a brief melee. Two Upson players and one Monroe County player were ejected. Upson was also given a sideline warning.
Coach Michael Smallwood said he wasn’t surprised.
“They’re from Thomaston so I didn’t expect anything less,” sighed Smallwood.
After trading a few more possessions, the Dogs thought they had created some breathing room. Singleton dropped back and threw to Daniel Jungberg who cut right in front an Upson defender to take what would have been the Dogs third touchdown in. The play was negated by a holding call in the backfield, leaving the Bulldogs to punt once again.
The third quarter was a stalemate with neither team being able to get into a rhythm. The Upson Lee Knights started to get something going but on third and short, linebacker CJ Banks blitzed and hit the Upson running back in the backfield before he could get going forcing another punt. In the 4th quarter, the Dogs simply tried to play keep away from Upson and run as much clock as possible. The teams traded possessions. The Bulldog defense rose to the occasion twice, stopping the Knights on 4th down. The Monroe offense seemed to find a bit of a rhythm late but false start penalties in the usually loud stadium hampered the Dogs. Upson had one last gasp deep in their own territory but the attempt was thwarted when defensive lineman Jayden Coleman busted through the line and hit the quarterback from behind causing a fumble. The fumble was recovered by Trace Hill at the Upson 17 yard line. The Bulldogs got in the popular “victory” formation and ran the clock out to seal the win.

"Family engagement is not a single event. It is a shared responsibility in which regular two-way communication insures that the student is on track to meet grade-level requirements."
