Monroe County Schools Named 2022 Cognia System of Distinction
September 16, 2022 - Monroe County Schools has been named a 2022 Cognia System of Distinction, a program which recognizes pre-K–12 education institutions that exemplify excellence in education and service to learners. Cognia selected Monroe County Schools as one of the 96 schools and 38 systems out of more than 1,500 institutions that were eligible for its 2022 Cognia Schools and Systems of Distinction.
“We are so proud of our teachers and instructional staff for ensuring engaging, rigorous, and nurturing learning environments for our students so they can learn, grow, and succeed each day,” said Dr. Mike Hickman, Monroe County Schools Superintendent.
Monroe County Schools participated in Cognia’s rigorous Accreditation Engagement Review process, which is based on research-based performance standards. The process includes a third-party review by education experts of evidence, interviews, and classroom observations. The evaluation covers Leadership Capacity, Learning Capacity, and Resource Capacity, as well as a demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement. Monroe County Schools received its reaccreditation in March 2022.
“Monroe County Schools is to be commended on their recognition as a School of Distinction,” said Dr. Mark A. Elgart, president and CEO of Cognia. “Cognia Accreditation is already a mark of distinction recognized around the world. Being named a School or System of Distinction further recognizes the commitment to education quality Monroe County has for its learners,” he added.

Students recently participated in an exercise to illustrate the power of their words. The image of a plate of spilled toothpaste is a powerful metaphor for words leaving our control, and the kids were able to see that just like the toothpaste, "once the words leave your mouth, you can't take them back."
Thank you to Stan Hickman, DMD, & Southern Smiles, Clell Morris, DMD, & Forsyth Dental Center, and Deena Holliman Smith, DMD, for generously donating all the toothpaste needed for the students to experience this lesson.

Tell-tale Heart Mock Trial
Mrs. Horne's, Ms. Turner's, & Ms. Moorman's ELA classes conducted mock trials to determine the sanity of the narrator in Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart. The students were very excited to research and prepare for this, and they were thoroughly convincing as judge, bailiff, jury, witnesses, defense, prosecution, & court reporters.
