Students at Bob Hoover Academy at the Monterey County Office of Education demonstrated leadership and compassion by donating $500 to the Rape Crisis Center of Monterey County to support human trafficking prevention and education efforts.
The donation was presented during a special check presentation at the academy’s campus at the Salinas Municipal Airport. Robyn Guzik, Deputy Director of the Rape Crisis Center, attended the event and spoke with students about the organization’s mission, the importance of advocacy and prevention services, and the role education plays in addressing human trafficking in local communities.
The funds were raised entirely by students, who dedicated two afternoons of their own time to plan, organize, and sell merchandise in support of a cause they believed in. Before selecting the Rape Crisis Center, students researched and discussed 10 nonprofit organizations, engaging in thoughtful conversations about community needs and social issues.
Through this hands-on experience, students saw firsthand how collective action can make a meaningful difference.

Grounded in the principles of understanding the roots of our community, equity in action, co-created innovations, and sustainable transformation, each session connected theory to practice while supporting the four goals of the California Community Schools Framework. Participants explored strategies to strengthen collaboration, elevate student voice, and deepen family engagement to ensure meaningful, lasting impact.
Hundreds attended the energizing event, which also featured a variety of exhibitors.
The Monterey County Office of Education played a key role in hosting the conference, with County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Deneen Guss delivering an inspiring address that highlighted the importance of collective leadership and reaffirmed Monterey County’s commitment to advancing community schools that center equity, collaboration, and student success.

In February, Monterey County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Deneen Guss visited schools in the Salinas Union High School District (SUHSD). The visit was part of the Monterey County Office of Education’s (MCOE) ongoing efforts to better understand schools' needs and enhance support for students and educators.
Across campuses, a strong, consistent focus on student-centered learning, well-being, and future readiness was observed. Districtwide efforts, such as the Portrait of a Graduate and the Student Advisory Council, reflect a clear commitment to elevating student voice and preparing learners for college, career, and civic life.
At El Sausal Middle School, hands-on science and applied learning were on full display, including students building catapults in woodworking class. Intentional supports for multilingual learners and integrated wellness services highlighted the school’s equity-driven approach.
Mount Toro High School showcased impactful programs, including the Child Development Center and Carr Lake Community Day School, where staff demonstrated deep care and commitment to ensuring students feel safe, valued, and connected.
At North Salinas High School, the team toured new facilities, including a Wellness Center, and engaged with Special Education staff and students, witnessing a culture of inclusion and belonging alongside strong academic supports.

The visit also included Mission Trails Regional Occupation Program (ROP), where Career Technical Education pathways in emergency response, medical and dental assisting, nutrition services, and many others reflect strong workforce alignment and hands-on learning opportunities.
In addition to celebrating these strengths, MCOE leaders engaged in thoughtful conversations with district administrators about current challenges, resource needs, and opportunities for continued collaboration.

Whether it is a holiday, a milestone, or simply a regular school day, the team at Gabilan School goes the extra mile to make it a place where joy is shared and every student knows they matter.
| Stirring Up Team Spirit at MCOE | |
MCOE staff located at the Main Campus kicked off the new year with the first large social gathering of 2026. Employees gathered for a spirited Souperbowl Showdown held just before the big game. Departments brought their culinary creativity to the table, preparing favorite soup recipes to share during a lively lunchtime tasting event.
From savory classics to bold new flavors, the friendly competition invited staff to sample, vote, and celebrate one another’s talents beyond the workplace. The event transformed an ordinary lunch hour into a vibrant social experience filled with laughter, conversation, and a little healthy rivalry.
| |
At MCOE, building connections across departments is valued as an important part of a strong workplace culture. Events like the Souperbowl Showdown create intentional opportunities for staff to step away from daily responsibilities, connect with colleagues, and foster a sense of community. By promoting healthy, inclusive ways for employees to gather and engage, MCOE continues to cultivate an environment where collaboration and camaraderie thrive.
The result? Full bowls, full hearts, and a “souper” start to the year ahead.

| Dr. Guss Celebrates Administrative Assistants at SVC ACSA Dinner | |
Monterey County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Deneen Guss was honored to speak at the 2026 Roaring 20's Administrative Assistants Dinner Dance hosted by the Salinas Valley ACSA Charter in late February. The event brought together school leaders and staff to celebrate the vital role administrative assistants play in supporting students, families, and educators.
During her remarks, Dr. Guss recognized administrative assistants as the steady and compassionate presence that helps schools function each day. She highlighted the many ways administrative assistants serve as the first point of contact for students, parents, and staff, often providing guidance, reassurance, and solutions throughout the school day.
“Administrative assistants are the heartbeat of our schools,” Dr. Guss shared. “Behind every well organized day and every answered phone call, there is someone making sure everything runs smoothly.”
She also emphasized that administrative assistants do far more than manage schedules and paperwork. They help create welcoming environments, support school communities, and ensure that students and families feel seen, heard, and valued.
Dr. Guss and all the superintendents in attendance thanked the dedicated professionals for their patience, organization, and kindness, noting that their work often goes unnoticed but has a lasting impact on school culture and student success.
The evening served as a celebration of the many contributions administrative assistants make every day and an opportunity for the community to express appreciation for their dedication to Monterey County schools.

Attendees had the opportunity to learn about positions aligned with their education and experience and, in many cases, participate in on-the-spot interviews. In total, 39 interviews were conducted that day across participating districts and schools.
Eighteen school districts, colleges, and charter schools participated alongside MCOE’s Special Education, Alternative Education, Early Learning Program, and Credentials teams, all seeking to recruit candidates for a variety of open roles across Monterey County.
