MCRH Wraps 2022 Rural Health Conference; Honors Rural Health Professionals of the Year


It was a triumphant return to in-person events as the Michigan Center for Rural Health held its 2022 Rural Health Conference, April 28-29, at Soaring Eagle Resort in Mt. Pleasant, MI. 


In attendance were over 150 participants, 24 exhibitors, 11 Leadership in Rural Medicine (LRM) students from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine who participated in the 5th Annual Rural Health Research Day, and expert speakers who presented a wide range of pertinent topics focused on this year's theme, "Stronger Together: Navigating A New Normal."


One of the main highlights of this year's event was a special luncheon to honor this year's Rural Health Professionals of the Year. This year's awardees were recognized for exemplary work during the COVID-19 pandemic, including promoting evidence-based standards, exhibiting excellent leadership, and primarily, for the unwavering support of rural health professionals throughout Michigan.

17 Michigan Rural Hospitals Receive 'A' Grade In Leapfrog Safety Guide

A story recently published in the Detroit Free Press (full story here) highlighted that Michigan hospitals ranked 5th in the nation when it comes to safety based on a report by The Leapfrog Group.


The biannual report, issues grades to hospitals on such measures as medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as systems in place to prevent harm. 


Seventeen Michigan rural hospitals received an 'A' grade according to The Leapfrog Group report. Those hospitals are:


Congratulations to these rural hospitals and the hard-working staff that contribute to this achievement! The grades are publicly reported at HospitalSafetyGrade.org.

MSU SANE Program Announces 4th Cohort: January - March 2023


This 12-week on-line course is the first step of an educational opportunity offered by MSU College of Nursing developed to expand access to Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) for Michigan patients presenting with a complaint of sexual violence.

• Nurses who successfully complete the 12-week on-line course through registration, participation, and evaluation will be awarded 40 nursing professional development contact hours.


• Upon successful completion of the on-line education component, nurses will advance to the next steps of SANE training including a clinical skills training workshop with validation on campus in East Lansing, MI and assistance with an individualized plan to obtain practice hours required to prepare for the certification exam.


• An opportunity to participate in an evaluation component to improve understanding of the challenges and needs of nurses on the SANE certification journey is included.


•There is no cost to participants for educational activities and travel.

Hillsdale Hospital's

JJ Hodshire Wins NHRA Award


JJ Hodshire, Hillsdale Hospital President and CEO, was awarded the Louis Gorin Award for Outstanding Achievement in Rural Health Care at this year's NHRA Annual Rural Health Awards, held May 12, 2022 in Albequerqe, NM.


JJ was recognized based on all the terrific work he has done to help vaccinate rural areas for COVID-19, along with demonstrating strong leadership, determination, and vision.


This award also speaks to JJ's remarkable passion for creating long-term sustainability for rural hospitals.


Well done, JJ!

Upcoming Rural Health Listening Session - Housing & Health Care


Session #2: Housing and Health Care for People Experiencing Homelessness Summit - June 15, 2022 Primo Center, Chicago, IL, 9:00am-3:30pm (CST)

 

The Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA), Office of Intergovernmental and External Affairs (IEA) Region 5, Chicago in collaboration with the Primo Center based in Chicago, will host an event providing information on housing and health care services which are available to those experiencing homelessness in the Chicago area.


Representatives from various organizations will provide updates on new streams of funding, housing options, and accessible health care services.


The event is free, however prior registration is required.

(Please note in person registration is limited to 50 individuals)

LARA Rules Requiring Implicit Bias Training Take Effect June 1

 

The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) revised Public Health Code Rules requiring implicit bias training for all professions licensed or registered under the Public Health Code, except for Veterinary Medicine, effective June 1.


To complete this requirement, the Michigan Health Council is pleased to offer implicit bias training for health care professionals. Each training will include an overview of how to recognize implicit bias, an in-depth discussion, and exercises on the following six topics:

  • Race
  • Sex/Gender
  • Socioeconomic Status
  • Mental Health
  • Body Habitus
  • Neurodiversity

The training is available in two formats, hybrid or live guest lecture. In a hybrid delivery model, learners will watch a one-hour video on demand and attend a one-hour webinar to engage in a robust discussion and group exercises with the instructor and other learners. This training is available for $50 per person. Register here.

 

With a guest presentation, organizations can offer the training to their staff on-site at their convenience. The presentation will include an introduction to implicit bias and targeted exercises, discussion, and evaluation questions.
