MCS Heroes
of the Week

Shelby Johnson
Terri Rodriguez
Reggie Biancalani

Reggie Biancalani: Elementary Principal
We would like to nominate Reggie Biancalani as our Hero of the Week! She is really a hero of the Year in the way she leads our elementary team! Reggie comes in each day and commits 110% to supporting her staff. She goes beyond the day to day demands to create an exceptional school environment. She is our biggest cheerleader and valued advisor. Above all, Reggie seeks God in all that she does and it is evident that she lives out her faith. It is an honor and a pleasure to work for her and we are beyond blessed for her leadership and her passion for this school. She is most deserving of this award! Love, The TK team!

Reggie: We are so blessed to work with you. You never expect us to do anything you are not willing to do yourself. With all of the extra work which has surfaced through our phase 1 renovation, you have stepped up to working even harder and longer to make MCS a success. When there are conflicts that occasionally arise, you always ask good questions, offer advice that helps us think and grow, and you leave us with encouragement that helps us continue to fall forward and move ahead. You work hard to plan our meetings and in-services so that all of us will walk away challenged and better prepared to serve our students. When you sense that we are in a slump, you find a reason for a celebration. We feel blessed to have you as our leader. The Kindergarten Team

Reggie: We are so grateful for the way you lead, support, and invest in our elementary team. Thank you for pouring out wisdom and speaking into our strengths. We appreciate the many ways you give us opportunities to grow and take on leadership. All that you do does not go unnoticed. Thank you for leading with Him at the center. We are incredibly blessed to have you leading our team. We love you! First Grade

Shelby Johnson, Middle School Math Teacher
Shelby s a hero! Not only has she tackled the challenging subject of math as a new teacher, but always stays positive and optimistic in the crazy of the school year. She has a calming peace she brings to any room she enters and is a blessing to be around! I've never heard her say a negative thing about anyone and believe she honestly views everyone in in their best light. She chooses to see their heart and has belief in who God has made them to be. I wish I had a teacher like Shelby when I was in middle school!

Being a first year teacher at MCS can be difficult but combining that with being a first year math teacher is quite the feat! But, she does so with diligence, dedication, hard work, and positivity. She wants to grow and learn and is so humble. Shelby deserves to be recognized as a hero even though her humility would probably prompt her to want to go unnoticed!

Jenna Van Leer, 5th Grade Teacher
Your passion for teaching and your heart for kids are evident in all that you do. You take the time to make sure that every student is valued. That is an inspiration to us. Your 5th grade team

Terri Rodriguez, Educational Technology/Maker Education Strategic Planning Director
Terri is an amazing, hard-working hero! She tirelessly shares her gifts with a servant's heart and is ALWAYS willing to lend a helping hand. She never ceases to amaze with her many, many talents and creative mind and is always willing to take on a new challenge. She is an inspiration to her students and us all! Her kindness is a true reflection of God's love.

The epitome of a Godly selfless leader, her love for MCS is evident in her tireless hours of maker space advancement, Blackbaud trainings, Renweb mastery and robotics leadership. On top of that, she is always willing to help out with any issue small or large with a gracious smile and happiness. MCS is truly blessed to have such an amazing Godly leader in our Technology and Maker Departments.

Unless you work closely with Terri, you wouldn't know she is a true Renaissance woman, full of so many unique talents and gifts. From sewing to building to programming to designing and more, there's nothing that she can't do! And she so willingly lends her gifts and talents wherever they are needed. Terri is also brilliant and has a great mind for planning and details while also being able to see big picture with great vision. It is rare for a person to have both the ability to see the small and dream for the big but Terri is able to do both. She has been faithful to doing both at MCS for many, many years and she deserves recognition. Though much of what she does happens behind the scenes and isn't always recognized, it makes an impact, a huge impact! And we are thankful for our hero, Terri!

Thank you Terri! We all rely so much on you and we are so thankful for all you do!

Elementary Grandparents & Special Friends Day May 10th

Dear Elementary Parents: Our Elementary Grandparents & Special Friend Day will be held on Friday, May 10, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. This event is a much loved tradition at Mariners Christian School. It is a time when your elementary student (TK-5th grade) may invite grandparents or another adult who plays a special role in his or her life to visit our campus. The day begins in the Argyros Center for Worship and Performing Arts with a special elementary program. Following the program, the guests will meet the students in their classrooms for campus tours. Click here for continuation of the letter from Mrs. Biancalani.

Please forward the below link to your TK-5th grade student's Grandparents/Special Friends.

Elementary Spiritual Emphasis Week
With the theme of His Story, our elementary students spent a special week focusing on the Easter Story. They heard from five characters whose stories intersected with His: Pilate's wife, the Soldier at the Cross, Joseph of Arimathea, Mary Magdalene, and Simon Peter. Each class had time in the Reflective Space - a quiet time using the art and other objects to think about Jesus, His death and resurrection, and to create a personal journal writing or drawing to place in the wooden HIS letters. Mr. Hellriegel, 5th grade Bible teacher, talked to our fifth grade students about owning their faith in a chapel just for them called the Chair Talk. Our verses this week were John 20:31 and Matthew 16:16.

Our challenge to the TK- 5th grade students has been "to know the story so you can tell the story" and to answer the question, "What is YOUR story?" Enjoy a few pictures CLICKa short video CLICK, and the links to the  worship songs (below) from this week. Take some time as a family over the Easter holiday to talk about how God impacted your child's heart this week. Click on the blue button following the videos to view the photo gallery.

Imaginology 2019
What a successful weekend at Imaginology! Our school's booth was busy all weekend long with visitors from all over Southern California.

In the large gallery, MCS had over 300 students with work on display, and we even had two projects that were division winners. Congratulations to Mary Jane Pfaff and Sophia Cowell for winning the Cardboard Engineering contest and to Talia Proctor for winning the Haiku contest.

All students who had work entered in the exhibits will receive their ribbons later this week. Projects will be on display in the Makerspace during Open House and Grandparents' Day.

Spring Dress Code Reminder
It's springtime - flowers are growing, trees are growing, and your children are growing! Unfortunately, their uniforms can't grow with them, which means the uniform that fit your student at the beginning of the year may no longer fit appropriately now. Please take a few moments this week with your student to make sure their uniforms fit well and still follow middle school dress code guidelines.

As a reminder, skirt hemlines should be no shorter than 3 inches above the knee, and pants must be full-length; no folded, shortened, or frayed pant legs.

In addition, given the unusual amount of rainy days we have been experiencing, please keep in mind that all students may wear rain jackets for the rain or MCS sweatshirts. Students may not wear fashion jackets (jean jackets etc.), and only 8th grade students may wear university or DC sweatshirts.

If you have any questions about uniform or dress code guidelines or how these policies are implemented, follow this link to the MS Uniform Guidelines page here, see our MS Uniform Reminders page here, or contact Mrs. Niles at [email protected].
