A Note to Haylee Pierce, Middle School Aide
This week, we want to honor Ms. Pierce as the middle school hero of the week! She has been such an amazing addition to the middle school team and a blessing to the staff, students, and families! She is such a blessing, that the students themselves shared their own highlights of Ms. Pierce:

Miss Pierce is great to have around in the learning center! She is great to have because she is very encouraging to me. Whenever I need help on math she is always there for me because she is very good at math. I love Miss Pierce! -8th grade student

Mrs. Pierce has been such a help for us. I love how kind and sweet and patient she is in all situations even if we're driving her crazy during one of our class periods. She is so good at math and I can't thank her enough for the help she's given me in that subject. She is truly awesome. -8th grade student

Miss Pierce is so much fun to have in the learning center. When ever I need help with math she always can help me. Miss Pierce is also very kind and sweet and always wants to help out. -6th grade student

Miss Pierce is really nice and fun in study skills. When I need help or not she's really nice and helpful!
-6th grade student

Mrs. Pierce has made an impact on helping me learn by helping me with my homework. Another thing is that she answers all of my questions when I need an answer. -6th grade student

Mrs. Pierce has always and will help me out in study skills with my homework, planner, or if I am confused. She is so nice and kind, she brightens up the class room. -6th grade student

Miss. Pierce is always kind and always helps me when I'm confused. She also helps us with math and does a great job at teaching. -6th grade student

Mrs. Pierce always is patent when I make a mistake and answers my questions the best she can.She is helpful especially in math. Thank you for teaching me how to be organized and much more.Thank you Mrs. Pierce. -6th grade student

She helps me when in math. She also is like a sister to me. -6th grade student

"I love Mrs. Pierce, she is so patient, she is willing and always ready to help with anything, she has been a huge help to Mrs. Willis. Thank you so much Mrs. Pierce for all that you do, we love you! Love, Payton"

"Mrs. Pierce has effected me in the learning center by many ways but the main one I want to point out is her encouraging attitude. Every time I come to the learning center I always encounter her with her checking my planner and sometimes motivating me to get the assignment done. Mrs. Pierce always stands in the learning center with an attitude that temps me to try my best and work hard. "

Happy February, MCS Families! We are excited to offer the opportunity for our MCS middle school students and all MCS parents to send a "Thoughts From The Heart" Valentine to MCS students, staff, and teachers. Proceeds from the sales will go t o The Shalima Learning Center , which serves local at risk youth by hosting an incredible after school program for students K-12 in Costa Mesa!

Please take note of these important details:  Thoughts From The Heart are $1 each and will be sold from 2/4 - 2/8. They will be delivered to homeroom teachers before Valentine's Day parties on 2/14.

HOW TO PURCHASE:

ASB students will be selling TFTH to middle school students at lunch recesses for middle school students to purchase for teachers, fellow classmates and younger siblings throughout the week.  Middle schoolers should bring cash to school in order to purchase. They can either  print out the attached Thoughts From the Heart template & write their notes at home, or they can complete them at the time of purchase during their lunch recess.

Elementary Parents can purchase TFTH in two ways:
  1. **EASIEST OPTION FOR YOU** print out the attached Thoughts From the Heart template and write notes to your children and/or teachers you wish to purchase a TFTH for. Place the notes, along with $1 per note you wish to purchase in an envelope and write "THOUGHTS FROM THE HEART" on the front of the envelope. We recommend sealing the envelope so that nothing falls out. Have your child turn the envelope in to their homeroom teacher, who will place it in the mailbox outside of their classroom door and ASB students will collect them. Please send exact change for the amount of TFTH you desire to purchase; any excess funds sent will be considered a donation to Shalimar Learning Center.

  2. Visit the front lobby on 2/4-2/8 where you will find a Thoughts From The Heart station. We will provide printed TFTH notes at this table. You can write your notes and attach exact change to them with a paperclip and file them in the grade levels for your children in the TFTH box. If purchasing for multiple children, feel free to attach payment for all of your TFTH to one of the notes, but please file each note in the appropriate grade level so that we can ensure it gets to your child! Please bring exact change, as change will not be provided at this station. You are welcome to donate your change.

Elementary Chapel: How Am I Marked By God?
Our chapel opened up with the 4th grade orchestra playing, and then students from 3rd and 5th grade shared written pieces about "What I Like Best About Me." Weaving our 2019 Theme of "HIS," Mrs. Celek shared how we are marked by God to be unique and to do HIS work of telling others about Jesus.
Making Snow in Transitional Kindergarten

Transitional Kindergarten read The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats and also made glittery snow Play Dough to coincide with the story.

We will be making icicles next week for our culmination!

2nd Grade Marketplace: Entrepreneurs in the Making

Transforming their classroom into a "Marketplace," second grade students assumed the role of entrepreneurs on Friday. Each student developed his/her product (food items, games, and services) and storefront (booth). Consumers included teachers, staff, and classmates. Great job 2nd grade.
Mrs. Meyer's 2nd Grade Class has been Collecting Water Bottles to Raise $$$ for Haiti

Dear Families,

I am so excited that I will be joining our MCS team of teachers on our Faith Adventure Trip (see below). MCS teachers will be conducting a conference for local teachers surrounding the Glory Glory Center. The money that the 2M students raise will be used to supply the teachers of Haiti with Math Manipulatives and other tools that they can use in their own classrooms. We are almost at our goal of 2000 water bottles! I have been amazed at the effort of my students, and the continuous prayers they have for the children of Haiti and for me. Thank you to the families that have already donated items to create the Math Tool Kits.

If you would like to help support our team, we are still collecting the following items:
  • Sandwich, zip lock bags
  • Gallon, zip lock bags
  • Sheet protectors
  • Dice
  • Decks of Playing Cards
  • Round chopsticks

Eight MCS Teachers Join Faith Adventure to Haiti
Eight members of our MCS Staff have committed to a Faith Adventure to Glory Glory Center in Torbeck, Haiti during Ski Week in February. Glory Glory Center is a Mariners Church funded orphanage for 55 children (since 2010) and is now in the middle of a construction project to build a premier private school with an anticipated opening of Fall 2019. I have been working alongside of the Core Haiti Ministry Team at Mariners Church for a few years (two onsite visits) and have vision for our AMAZING MCS Staff to help this new staff with Professional Development. This trip will serve as an exploration visit to formulate relationships with the community (Glory Glory Center Staff and Children as well as the local schools), develop strategic planning around Professional Development and gather information to bring back to our MCS Staff to consider this ministry as our next MCS Global Outreach partner.

To learn more about Pastor Sam Matelus (Director) and his vision for the ministry, check out this short video: http://www.haitiministrymarinerschurch.com/  watch-the-video/ or view the ministry page at this link: http://www.haitiministrymarinerschurch.com/

Below you will find individual team member pages. Click in to see their stories of why they feel God is calling them to embark on this Faith Adventure.

New Law to Go Into Effect July 1, 2019
There have been recent changes to school entry immunization requirements that go into effect July 1, 2019. We are sharing these changes with you so that you may work with your child's healthcare provider to make sure your child is vaccinated (California Code of Regulations Title 17, Division 1, Chapter 4.) There has been the addition of a second Varicella vaccine requirement for entry into elementary school at Transitional Kindergarten (TK)/Kindergarten (K) and/or seventh grade, administered by a licensed California Healthcare Practitioner.

Grade                   Number of Doses Required of Each Immunization
TK/K-12 Admission 4 Polio 5 DTaP 3 Hep B 2 MMR 2 Varicella
7th-12th Grade 1 Tdap

7th Grade Advancement 2 Varicella 1 Tdap

California schools are required by law to check the immunization records for all new student admissions at TK/Kindergarten through 12th grade and all students advancing to 7th grade before entry. Students meeting all immunization requirements will be unconditionally admitted to school. Students may also be unconditionally admitted if they have a permanent medical exception in accordance with Section 6051. Your child may receive the necessary vaccines from his/her primary care practitioner or pharmacy. It is important to get your child vaccinated early so there will be no issue with school entry. Please make sure you bring your child's vaccine record to the school so it may be on file. Should you have questions, please contact the MCS Health office or your child's health care provider.

Middle School Chapel
For most of our middle school students, this week's Chapel message was unlike any other they have heard, as the majority of it was delivered in Mandarin!  With our 32 students from Wenyuan Middle School visiting, we wanted to share the gospel message in a way that was completely clear and unmistakable, and in their primary language.  We were privileged to have Pastor Andrew Ma from Chinese Baptist Church of Central Orange County, accept this important calling.  He spoke from Mark 10:17-21, explaining that this rich young ruler was a good man who obeyed the law, and who had everything, but he lacked one thing that gave his life meaning...Jesus.  Jesus loved that young ruler like he loves each of us and wants to give us life abundant.  But the young ruler went away sad because he knew his life was in vain without Jesus, and he struggled with his willingness to give it all up to follow Jesus.  Pastor Ma encouraged us to give up everything to follow Jesus and accept His abundant life that is so much richer than what we've ever known. It truly was the perfect way to begin our week with our friends from China!
Lunch Rally
Our friends from China participated in our Homeroom Competition this week, and helped add to the fun!  The Wenyuan students each dangled a donut on a string in front of an MCS student.  To add a degree of excitement, challenge, and messiness, the donuts were covered in whip cream, chocolate sauce, and sprinkles!  The Mariners students had to eat the donut off the string without using their hands, and the first one finished was declared the winner.  Congratulations to Kailin Rieke from 6G for finishing first! Enjoy the photos.
