Angie Nakamoto

Congratulations to Mac and Angie. We hope you enjoy your up-front parking spot.

Mac Thompson, Athletic Director:
Mac is a hero who builds passion and excitement for all our young athletes to play in Jesus' name! We all appreciate Mac's heart for using sports as a place to forge deeper character and integrity, and for calling out leadership in our MCS students as he challenges them to continue to grow not only in their athletic skills and giftings, but in humility as well. In addition to all the time and love he invests in our our athletic program, he has also built our woodshop program giving a whole new space and opportunity for students to grow as creators. He models what it is to be a team player as he is willing to jump in to help. One great example of this was Spiritual Emphasis Week when he built the amazing cross that will now be a part of MCS forever! Coach T... you are awesome and you are a hero!!!!

Angie Nakamoto, After School Program Director:
You are wonderful with all of our students! You are a true blessing to staff and a joy to work alongside! Your love for students is a gift from God! Thank you!
Staff Appreciation Week Fun hosted by PTF
A BIG thank you to the Staff Appreciation Week Committee of Valerie Riener, Dana Fiori, and Robyn Gundlach, for creating the fun theme for the week and organizing all the events. Your heart for the staff and the hours of loving effort made this a truly sweet week for us all! Thank you to all the parents for the yummy lunch contributions, hosting help, and gestures of love to our staff!
With Grateful Appreciation from the MCS Staff
Our Parent Teacher Fellowship had the fun of loving on our amazing MCS Staff all week long! It was a blast to bless our "Super Heroes" with a Monday morning coffee cart, daily lunches, raffle drawings, and words of affirmation. There were "treats" for the soul with Holy Yoga and a special staff meeting devotional by Jason and Joanne Mowery, MCS Alumni parents. Every staff person at MCS contributes in a huge way to make this a remarkable place for our students and families - and a great place to work!

A BIG thank you to the Staff Appreciation Week Committee of Valerie Riener, Dana Fiori, and Robyn Gundlach, for creating the fun theme for the week and organizing all the events. MCS Spirit Wear Spirit
Did you see the Lion in carpool this week? PTF would like to extend a HUGE thank you to Adam Ah You, PTF Treasurer, and his fabulously fun committee for the Spirit Wear Sale this past week.

Board Candidates Letter from MCS Board Vice Chair
Dear MCS Families:

I am pleased to present Melinda Choi and David Giunta to you as candidates to serve on the Mariners Christian School Board of Trustees.  The purpose of the MCS Board is to secure the school's fiscal health, appoint and evaluate the Head of School, and ensure the school fulfills its stated mission. Information regarding the Board is available on our website at the  "About MCS" section.

We believe Melinda and David will bring a wealth of experience to the Board that will help us fulfill our duties with faithfulness and excellence. However, before any candidate is approved for the Board, it is our practice to send a notice to the MCS Community to determine if there are any opinions relative to either candidate's suitability.

Please contact me on or before May 13, 2019 at mcsboard@marinerscs.org if you have any feedback.

Sincerely,

Brian Darrow

David Giunta Biography

David and Beth have been married for 18 years and have five children, including three at MCS: Kiana (MCS Class of 2020), Kamryn (MCS Class of 2022), and Micah (MCS Class of 2027). Their oldest daughter, Kayla, obtained her Master's in Occupational Therapy from USC and their oldest son, Dylan, attends CDMHS where he receives special education for Down Syndrome.

David earned a B.A. from Ohio University where he graduated cum laude in Accounting and Business Law. Beth graduated from San Diego State and received her Master's in Clinical Psychology from Azusa Pacific.

David commenced his career as a CPA auditing public companies with Arthur Andersen, the world's largest accounting firm in the world at the time. David parlayed this experience in the private sector by transitioning to full balance sheet financial advisement for high net worth individuals. Currently, David is the Managing Partner of BlackPlum Partners, a private wealth management and alternative investments company.

Outside of his career, David enjoys spending time with his family and pursuing philanthropic initiatives. David serves on the Board of Directors for the Down Syndrome Foundation of Orange County, a cause that is close to his heart. David and Beth have been ardent advocates for the integration and mainstreaming of children with special needs.

David also serves on the MCS Finance Committee and is eager to serve on the Board of Trustees. David is passionate to serve the Lord in the capacity of a Board member. He hopes to use his testimony, his experience as a parent at MCS for the past eight years, and his financial and business acumen to serve the school with humility and in any way that God wants to use him to help maintain and strengthen the spiritual core and academic excellence that set MCS apart.

The Giunta family regularly attends Watermark Church, a Mariners Church plant started by Pastor Bucky  Dennis. They reside in the One Ford Road community of Newport Beach.

Elementary Grandparents & Special Friends Day May 10th

Dear Elementary Parents: Our Elementary Grandparents & Special Friend Day will be held on Friday, May 10, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. This event is a much loved tradition at Mariners Christian School. It is a time when your elementary student (TK-5th grade) may invite grandparents or another adult who plays a special role in his or her life to visit our campus. The day begins in the Argyros Center for Worship and Performing Arts with a special elementary program. Following the program, the guests will meet the students in their classrooms for campus tours. Click here for continuation of the letter from Mrs. Biancalani.

Please forward the below link to your TK-5th grade student's Grandparents/Special Friends.

Middle School Spiritual Emphasis Week

Thank you to every family who partnered with us during Spiritual Emphasis Week through praying, attending Chapels, and joining with us in our intentional efforts to Unplug to Plug In!  We hope you found it as beneficial and as liberating as we did.  We saw God move each day in powerful ways through the Chapel messages, individual responses, corporate worship, and Homeroom conversations!  The Holy Spirit worked in hearts and spoke to students in specific ways, which they were then able to share about in Homeroom Debriefs.  If you were not able join us for Chapels that week, please view the below recap of the week and/or the daily chapel messages to get a glimpse of how God worked in our lives.

MCS Alumni Chapel
We were honored to have over 30 alumni students in attendance on Monday morning for our annual Alumni Chapel! This year, a worship team comprised fully of MCS alumni kicked off Chapel by beautifully leading us into worship. We then got to hear more in depth from a panel of alumni students who talked about what life was like while they were at MCS, how God used MCS to shape them, what the transition to high school was like, and how God is working in their lives now! Our current students were able to glean from their words of advice and their experiences shared.

To close out the Alumni Chapel we surprised our 2019 Distinguished Alumni of The Year recipient, Trevor Lawrence, by recognizing him for the Kingdom-building work that God is doing in and through him in our community. Congratulation Trevor!

After Chapel, our alumni students scattered into homerooms where they had a more personalized question and answer time with our students, as they shared stories and wisdom through experience.  It was a beautiful morning, and our hearts were full to have so many of our MCS family return home!

Middle School Terra Nova Testing May 7th & 9th
Save the date! All middle school students will participate in Terra Nova testing on Tuesday, May 7th, and Thursday, May 9th. Please avoid scheduling appointments or trips during testing if at all possible. Over the course of the two days, students will complete grade level assessments in English and math. Testing will occur first thing in the morning, so it is important that all students arrive to school on time. Make-up testing will occur on Friday and Monday following testing.

We want all of our students to do their best on the tests and we encourage good sleep, a good breakfast, and a commitment to success!

Spring Dress Code Reminder
It's springtime - flowers are growing, trees are growing, and your children are growing! Unfortunately, their uniforms can't grow with them, which means the uniform that fit your student at the beginning of the year may no longer fit appropriately now. Please take a few moments this week with your student to make sure their uniforms fit well and still follow middle school dress code guidelines.

As a reminder, skirt hemlines should be no shorter than 3 inches above the knee, and pants must be full-length; no folded, shortened, or frayed pant legs.

In addition, given the unusual amount of rainy days we have been experiencing, please keep in mind that all students may wear rain jackets for the rain or MCS sweatshirts. Students may not wear fashion jackets (jean jackets etc.), and only 8th grade students may wear university or DC sweatshirts.

If you have any questions about uniform or dress code guidelines or how these policies are implemented, follow this link to the MS Uniform Guidelines page here, see our MS Uniform Reminders page here, or contact Mrs. Niles at kniles@marinerscs.org.
