Rebuilding Galena: A look at the U.S. 20 reconstruction project

After several years of planning and coordination between the City of Galena and IDOT, the reconstruction of U.S. 20 running through Galena, Illinois was completed in October. The project was necessary due to deteriorating road conditions, insufficient road capacity and open ditches that were prone to frequent severe flooding.

The reconstruction remedied the open drainage, widened the road and created a multi-modal path that connects the residential areas uphill to downtown Galena.

I-270 Mississippi River bridge reaches milestone in Madison County

Work to replace two Interstate 270 bridges over the Mississippi River in Madison County has reached the midway point with the completion of the south span. The joint project with the Missouri Department of Transportation is on track to wrap up in 2026.

The first of the twin bridge openings is expected to occur over four weeks in the following stages. Eastbound I-270 traffic was the first to be shifted to the new south span on two eastbound lanes. The westbound I-270 traffic will shift to the new bridge in January.

The overall $496.2 million joint project with MoDOT will replace the existing bridges with two structures that have wider shoulders to accommodate the eventual expansion of I-270 to three lanes in each direction. A companion $35.4 million MoDOT project will reconstruct the Riverview Drive interchange just west of the bridge.

Construction started in late 2022 and is anticipated to be complete in 2026. Visit the project website, 270mrb.org, for more information, including project maps, fact sheets and construction timeline.

Region 1, District 1: A stage change recently took place on eastbound I-80 as part of the ongoing efforts to rebuild the interstate in Minooka, Joliet and New Lenox. In the new configuration, the eastbound lanes will be shifted back over to the eastbound side onto the newly constructed pavement.

Later this year, westbound I-80, between Ridge and River roads will be shifted over to the eastbound side to allow for completion of work in the westbound lanes. Learn more about the project at www.i80will.org.

Region 2, District 3: More than 80 people attended a Dec. 4 informational public meeting to view and comment on the preliminary engineering and environmental study for the improvement of U.S. 6 (Bedford Road) in Morris. The study limits are from west of Ashton Road to Illinois 47 (Division Street).

Reconstruction of U.S. 6 will include drainage and safety improvements, ADA and bicycle accommodations, alignment changes and two lanes in each direction. Visit the project website at www.idot.click/US6MorrisStudy for more information or to comment about the project. Comments received by Dec. 24 will be included in the official meeting record.
