District Manages 36-Hour Power Outage Seamlessly

Prepared With Backup Power and Communications

The Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s (PGE) electrical system went down for about 36 hours on Saturday and Sunday, December 14 and 15 affecting the District and about 40,000 residents in the region. Fortunately, Marina Coast Water District (MCWD) was well prepared and successfully delivered uninterrupted water and wastewater service throughout the power shutdown.

MCWD has taken extensive measures in recent years to ensure it can provide quality water and wastewater services even during emergencies. Some of our key actions include:

• Crews on-call 24/7

• Backup generators

• Secondary backup generators

• Sewer pump bypass to further prevent sewer spills

• Remote monitoring and controls

• Redundant communications

• Water storage reservoirs

Stop Watering When it Rains

Save Water, Save Money, Improve Your Landscape

Please turn off your irrigation throughout the rainy season. Your landscape does not need extra water during wet and cool weather. In fact, too much water can cause problems. Turn off your irrigation to:

• Prevent fungal disease in plants 
• Save precious potable water
• Decrease your sewer bill. Your sewer bill is based on your winter average water use in December, January and February. The less water you use now the lower your future sewer bill will be.
