E.U. officials and the Biden administration brokered a deal that will ease tariffs on E.U. steel and aluminum imports into the U.S. while eliminating retaliatory duties from the E.U. on several U.S. goods, including corn. Read more here.

Fall Cover Crop Planting Extension
Due to recent excessive rainfall and wet field conditions across the state, the Maryland Department of Agriculture extended the planting deadline for farmers who signed up to plant fall cover crops. To qualify, farmers now have until November 12th to plant wheat, spelt, rye, and triticale. Read more here.
National Wheat Foundation Yield Contest
Annually, the National Wheat Foundation has a yield contest. For the 2021 winter wheat contest on dryland, Billy Willard from Maryland is a Bin Buster with a final yield of 141.41 bushels per acre. Farm Stress Assistance Program

MDA in partnership with the University of Maryland Extension announced a new statewide Farm Stress Assistance program designed to provide physical and mental health resources to rural communities. This joint effort will provide stress management training to rural Marylanders, provide direct counseling to families, and outreach through social, educational, and partner programs. Maryland Corn Hybrid Trials

The University of Maryland Corn Hybrid Trial results are now live for the 2021 growing season! The results from the replicated trials provide agronomic performance information about corn hybrids tested at five locations in Maryland. In 2021, 71 hybrids were tested using three maturity groups. DCA Responds to EIP Report

The Environmental Integrity Project put together a report and recommendations on Maryland's poultry industry and presented it to the Maryland Department of Environment. The report can be found online here. The Delmarva Chicken Association responds, "when your goal is to cripple the business models fo family-owned chicken farms in the name of activism, you have to be willing to make some outlandish claims, as this report does." 2021 Soft Red Winter Wheat
The U.S. Wheat Associates released the 2021 Soft Red Winter Wheat Crop Report and the Full Crop Quality Report. SRW Wheat farmers produced an excellent 2021 crop. Through an analysis of 263 samples from elevators in 18 reporting areas across 11 states, indicated that wheat had very good performance characteristics.
Phosphate Fertilizers from Morocco

The National Corn Growers Association joined other agricultural groups in encouraging the U.S. court of international trade to overturn an earlier decision by the International Trade Commission, which imposed tariffs on imported phosphate fertilizers from Morocco. More can be found here.
Southern MD Farmer Mini-Grant Program

The Southern MD Agricultural Commission is pleased to announce the 9th Round of the Southern Maryland Farmer Mini-Grant Program. Applications are currently being accepted and due January 1st. Grants may be used for equipment/services that help transition a farm's sales strategy for other projects that allow the farm business to maintain and/or expand sales, and much more. TFI Commits to 70 Million Acres by 2030

The Fertilizer Institute looks to the future in announcing an industry-wide commitment to commit 70 million acres under 4R Nutrient Stewardship management by 2030. The University of Maryland will be holding the majority of its winter crop production meetings in person. There will be a few virtual options available as well. Scholarships
National Wheat Foundation

For students pursuing a degree in agriculture, the National Wheat Foundation is offering two scholarships in the amount of $2,500. Applications are due December 31st. More information can be found online here.
Farm Credit Foundation

The Farm Credit Foundation for Agricultural Advancement is kicking off its 2021-2022 scholarship program. High school seniors and students enrolled in two/four year higher education programs with plans to pursue a career in the agriculture industry are eligible to apply by January 7th. Applications and more information can be found online here.
Maryland Grain Producers Association partners with National Corn Growers Association

Maryland Grain Producers Association has partnered with the National Corn Growers Association to offer a single application for both scholarships! NCGA has three scholarship applications open for students in the following categories:
  • Tech School/Community College Student
  • Undergrad Students
  • Graduate Students

The MGPA scholarship is open to students enrolled in two year vocational schools or four-year universities seeking agricultural related degrees. Applicants families must be involved in grain production and members of MGPA.

Scholarship applications are due by January 31st and can be found here.
Mid Atlantic Certified Crop Advisers Scholarship

The Mid Atlantic Certified Crop Advisers will award up to two scholarships in the amount of $1,000 for students enrolled in an agronomy or related field. Applications are due Friday, February 18th, and can be found online here.
