Fertilizer Application
We wanted to remind you that the spreading of manure or other nutrient sources is now prohibited until March 1st. Temporary stockpiling of stackable organic nutrient sources with moisture content of 60% or less is allowed. More here.

National Corn Yield Contest

Chlorpyrifos Prohibited after December 31st

The Maryland Department of Agriculture is reminding farmers and pesticide applicators that regular use of chlorpyrifos products will be prohibited after December 31st. After the deadline, applicators may request a limited use authorization to be reviewed by the Secretary of Agriculture and granted on a case-by-case basis if there are no effective alternatives available. Legislation on Rural Suicide Approved

The Seeding Rural Resilience Act is legislation aimed at curbing the rising rate of suicide in rural areas. The suicide rate in rural America is 45% higher than in urban areas due to a number of reasons. Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis can call the National Suicide Prevention Line 24/7 at 1-800-273-TALK(8255). Learn more about the act here.

Soybean Research

Research on soybean planting population was conducted. The current recommendation is based on research for minimum tillage systems. Due to more frequent no-till beans and new varieties, research was done at five differnet planting populations. Results are to come, read more here.

Farm Credit Foundation Scholarship

The Farm Credit Foundation is offering 10 scholarships worth $10,000 each to students planning to pursue a career in agriculture. Applications are due January 8th. More information can be found here.

Grow Ag Leaders Scholarship

Grow Ag Leaders awards more than $500,000 in scholarships to students studying ag-related fields. Grow Ag Leaders asks farmers to endorse high school seniors or college students for a chance to win a $1,500 scholarship. Applications are due January 14th and can be found here.

MACCA Scholarship

The 2021 Mid-Atlantic Certified Crop Advisers Scholarship is now open and accepting applications until February 19th. Learn more here.
