Bay States Seek New Federal Funding Initiative for Farm Cleanup
Maryland Secretary of Agriculture, Joe Bartenfelder, and five other Chesapeake Bay state Secretaries of Agriculture sat down with U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack to discuss a proposal that would use federal funding to help clean up nutrient and sediment pollution from farms in the watershed. Spotted Lanternfly Quarantine Extended in Maryland
The Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) continues to plague northeast Mayland. Harford and Cecil County have extended their Spotted Lanternfly quarantines that were issued two years ago. The Maryland Department of Agriculture and Maryland Extension Service urge all Maryland residents to report sightings of the SLF and to take steps to reduce the spread of this invasive species. Nematode Plan Starts with Soil Samples

University of Delaware researchers are urging growers to pull soil samples from soybean fields that they suspect have nematodes. UD Extension staff explain that soil sampling is the only way to determine what type and the population of nematodes is plaguing your fields. Read more here.
CleanBay to Sell BP Renewable Natural Gas Derived from Poultry Litter

BP and Clean Bay Renewables announced a 15-year agreement where BP will purchase renewable natural gas that is processed from poultry litter, to sell to the U.S. Transporation sector as fuel. Read more about the agreement here.
Farm Credit Launches Farmers on the Rise Award Program
MidAtlantic Farm Credit announced their first-ever Farmers on the Rise award program, which opened September 1, awarding five $10,000 prizes to young, beginning, and/or small farmers in their territory. Learn more about the award program here.
New Insurance Option For Conservation-Minded Farmers

The USDA Risk Management Agency announced that farmers in certain states will be offered Post Application Coverage Endorsements (PACE) for non-irrigated corn for producers who split-apply nitrogen. The PACE will provide payments for the projected yield lost when producers are unable to apply the in-season nitrogen application. Read more here.

Maryland State Fair Youth Livestock Sale Grosses $131,000

At Maryland's "12 Best Days of Summer", 4-H and FFA youth (ages 8-18) who qualified were able to participate in the annual livestock sale. 70 Maryland youth were able to participate in this year's livestock auction. Click here to learn more about this year's auction.
High Oleic Soybean Varieties Continue Riding High

High oleic soybean varieties, which offer long-lasting oil for food processors and premiums for farmers, are becoming more popular amongst farmers in the Mid-Atlantic, which accounts for 20% of national production. Read more about high oleic beans here.

Registration is now open for Mid-Atlantic Farm Credits AgBiz Master's Program.
