Farmers regulated by the Nutrient Management Program are required to submit their 2021 Annual Implementation Reporting forms by March 1, 2022. Farmers have the option to submit their forms electronically. More information here.

MDA is urging all poultry farmers to remain vigilant and practice enhanced biosecurity on their farms after USDA APHIS confirmed findings of highly pathogenic avian influenza in wild birds in South and North Carolina. After the tornados plowed through Kentucky, Southern High School FFA Chapter met and decided to raise money and send supplies directly to farmers and specifically to an agriculture teacher who lost his home. Within a week they raised $35,000 in cash and in-kind donations of supplies. Over winter break seven FFA members and three chaperones traveled to Kentucky to clear fields of debris and helped fix livestock fence. Read the full story here.

The 2022 Maryland legislative session convened on Wednesday, January 13, 2022. The House of Delegates will be holding all committee hearings virtually and the Senate will also be virtual, at least until February 11th at which time leadership will re-evaluate having in-person hearings.

New bills are being posted daily on the General Assembly website. Those wanting to testify on bills must sign up and submit written testimony two days prior to the hearing.

On January 11th, the US EPA completed the registration amendment process for Enlist One and Enlist Duo herbicides from Corteva. Quick facts on the changes can be found here. The full supporting document from EPA can be found here.

The National Corn Growers Association cautioned EPA on Tuesday about moving forward with a rule that could give the federal government sweeping regulatory power over America's farmlands. The proposed rule would give the federal government leeway to assert jurisdiction over features that are remote from and carry only minor volumes of water to downstream navigable waters. More here.

The 2022 contest will add a new quality component. The 24 yield winners' wheat will be tested for baking and milling qualities and if it meets all the criteria for "industry-desired" quality, the farmer will receive an additional $500 cash award. MDA expanded its spotted lanternfly quarantine to include Anne Arundel, Baltimore County and City, Carroll, Cecil, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Kent, Montgomery, and Washington. This expansion has been based on the confirmed existence of known populations. More information can be found here.

Dr. David Owens reported the recently completed Pest Loss Survey 2021 covered close to 90,000 acres. Stink bugs, slugs, and corn earworms were the most problematic/troublesome overall. More information can be found online here.

Maryland Grain Producers Association has partnered with the National Corn Growers Association to offer a single application for both scholarships! NCGA has three scholarship applications open for students in the following categories:

The MGPA scholarship is open to students enrolled in two-year vocational schools or four-year universities seeking agricultural-related degrees. Applicant's families must be involved in grain production and members of MGPA. For the 2022 to 2023 school year, MGPA will be offering up to 5 scholarships in the amount of $3,000 each.

Scholarship applications are due by January 31st and can be found here.

The Mid Atlantic Certified Crop Advisers will award up to two scholarships in the amount of $1,000 for students enrolled in an agronomy or related field. Applications are due Friday, February 18th, and can be found online here.

For the 2022-2023 academic year, Maryland Farm Bureau is offering five $2,000 scholarships. Online applications are to b submitted by March 25th by 5:00 PM. Learn more online here.

For 2022, DCA is offering undergraduate scholarships of $2,000 and graduate scholarships of $3,000. Applications must be received no later than Friday, April 8th. Students working towards a degree in a subject relevant to Delmarva's chicken community are eligible. Find more information online here.
