Mississippi is the #1 producer of catfish in the nation, with a value of production of $232 million in 2021 alone. As National Catfish Month, I encourage everyone to support Mississippi catfish producers this August by buying U.S. Farm Raised Catfish produced by one of our local catfish farms. Always look for that 100% American seal when shopping at the grocery store!
And support all our Mississippi farmers, ranchers and ag producers by shopping locally. MDAC realizes these are difficult times and a lot of people have concerns about food availability and prices. So, I want to reassure all Mississippians that there are options available to them. This is the perfect time to shop local and there are a number of options for consumers to buy direct from farmers.
Visit GenuineMS.com to learn where you can find all things grown, raised, crafted and made right here in the Magnolia State. Shop at your local farmers market for all your fresh produce needs; visit msfarmersmarket.com to find a farmers market near you. Don't forget to check out the Mississippi Farm Marketplace to advertise your crops for sale or to find local crops to purchase.

Created in 2020, MDAC's Wild Hog Control Program (WHCP) provides “smart” wild hog traps to landowners and managers for the control of wild hogs on private agricultural and forestry lands in Mississippi. MDAC is currently accepting a new round of applications for its Wild Hog Control Program. All Mississippi counties are eligible for the application period, which closes Monday, August 15. Learn more about MDAC's Wild Hog Control Program and apply for assistance now at www.mdac.ms.gov/whcp.
In addition, Ag Commissioner Andy Gipson announced the WHCP's new Youth Trapping Corps, created through a partnership with Wildlife Dominion Management, LLC and the Mississippi FFA Association, during a press conference held at the Trade Mart. The Youth Trapping Corps is an expansion designed to educate and professionally develop student members of agriculture-based organizations, such as FFA, on the impact of nuisance animals on agriculture and the importance of wild hog management.
The first-of-its-kind program will provide FFA students around the state the opportunity to offer wild hog trapping services while gaining valuable skills and work-based learning experiences. For this initiative, Wildlife Dominion Management, LLC is partnering with MDAC and FFA to educate, train and provide technical support for the implementation of wild hog population control. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by representatives of all three organizations to mark this innovative partnership. Visit www.mdac.ms.gov/whcp-youth-trapping-corps to learn more about the WHCP Youth Trapping Corps.
Commissioner Gipson also recognized the Mississippi Pork Producers Association for their support of MDAC’s Wild Hog Control Program. The Mississippi Pork Board and the National Pork Board donated two panel trap systems that include traps, HogEye Camera Systems, solar power components and custom trailers. The donated trap systems will provide years of service to landowners and farmers through the WHCP to assist in protecting against the $60 million worth of damage caused by wild hogs in Mississippi annually.

“Due to various supply chain disruptions and labor shortages around the nation, our agency recognizes the concerns facing Mississippians to provide for their families,” said Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Andy Gipson. “However, I want to assure our citizens that there is no reason to worry about any potential food shortages.”
“Less than two percent of the American population are farmers,” continued Gipson. “That means that less than two percent of our nation is responsible for providing food, fiber and shelter to the remaining 98 percent. That's a tall order, and we should do all we can to support our farmers. Even with record-high gas prices, the fertilizer shortage and inflation, our Mississippi farmers and ranchers have not quit. They continue to provide in order to sustain our livelihoods during these difficult times.”

MDAC VISITS WITH MISSISSIPPI'S CATFISH FARMER OF THE YEAR | |
“Something that gets me every time, is when you first drop hatchlings into a pond. Twenty-one days. You’ve got about 21 days before you know if they’ve survived and will grow in their new environment. There’s nothing like the feeling of seeing those catfish hitting the surface after those 21 days and you can breathe a sigh of relief knowing you’ve done your job.”
– Andy Jones, Bear Creek Fisheries
| |
Andy Jones, manager of Bear Creek Fisheries and 2022 Catfish Farmer of the Year, described the pivotal moment of every new cycle of channel catfish fingerlings that are introduced to one of the 104 ponds located on the family-owned farm in Moorhead, Miss. If the new hatchlings successfully acclimate to the ponds, they will rise to the surface to feed – usually after 21 days. From this time, Jones and his staff continue to raise these fish to the desired size and quantity of consumers, a labor-intensive process that lasts around 18 months.
In 20 years, Jones hopes to still be working at Bear Creek Fisheries, which he calls a “way of life.” Eventually, when he prepares to transition to a less hands-on position, he hopes to see his children working at the family operation as well, just as he started his career.
