U.S. Census Bureau Partnership Specialists Ms. Lubby Navarro and Ms. Ana Maria Diaz informed everyone that every 10 years, the  U.S. Census Bureau  conducts a census to determine the number of people living in the United States. This census provides the basis for reapportioning Congressional seats and distributing billions of dollars in federal funding to support services and infrastructure in communities across the country. Commissioner Esteban Bovo, Jr., Miami-Dade County and Chair of the 2020 Census Task Force encouraged all to participate in the 2020 Census. He expressed that participation is crucial to ensure our County receives its fair share of federal funding to support local services and infrastructure as well as proper representation in Congress. He informed everyone that the questionnaire contains a few simple questions and only takes a few minutes to complete. This year, people will have the opportunity to complete the census online, making it easier than ever to participate.
Associate Superintendent Ms. Iraida Mendez-Cartaya and Police Major Ivan Silva of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools spoke of new school year initiatives, programs and the educational improvements public schools have made within the past 3 years. She proudly announced that the MDCPS is an "A" rated school district. MDCPS Police Major Ivan Silva presented public safety guidelines for the new school year and spoke of SB 7026 in place. He mentioned that the Legislature will provide law enforcement and the courts with the tools to enhance public safety by temporarily restricting firearm possession of a person who is undergoing a mental health crisis and when there is evidence of a threat of violence. Additionally by enhanced coordination between education and law enforcement entities at the state and local level it will promote school safety.
