Happy New Year!
The beginning of a new year is a perfect opportunity for reflection on the past year and time to set new personal and professional goals. Many of us will make New Years resolutions to improve our life, health and career. I would like to encourage our members to make a resolution to be more involved in your professional association. It can be something small like volunteering to help at one of our CE courses or something grand like becoming a delegate for our component at this years CDHA House of delegates meeting in June. We will be voting at our next CE course for our open board member and delegate positions. Please contact myself or any of our board members if you would like to become more involved. We love to see new faces, and welcome new voices and ideas to improve your association.
I would like to thank our members for their continued support and investment in our profession. For our members whose membership is due for renewal please visit CDHA.org to renew your membership today. If you have any questions regarding your CDHA membership please email memberservices@cdha.org. Remember there is strength in numbers and it is vitally important for our profession to maintain your membership with CDHA. If you have any colleagues that are currently non-members please encourage them to invest in their profession and invite them to join CDHA.
Please don't forget to sign up for our CE course on January 14. See this link to the flyer for all the details.
Wishing you good health, happiness, and success in the coming year,
Nicole Claus, RDH

Are you being misclassified as an independent contractor? Often dentist call it 'pay per patient' which if there is more than one patient cancellation can make for a long day and can affect our wallet as well. Are you being made to stay during those cancellations? Well, don't, unless you are being paid for staying. Sometimes employers will be willing to negotiate a rate of half our normal pay to help within the office with other duties. Make yourself more valuable and learn insurance coverages and breakdown of benefits which will also help with case management of your patients. If you feel like you are not being treated fairly always talk to your employer first and if things can't be resolved there are agencies that can help:
NLRB- contact for help or advice
www.nlrb.gov
Labor Commissioner also known as DIR-
Can help with back wages and also questions about your employee rights.
www.dir.ca.gov
EDD- contact if you are not able to work for an extended amount of time.
www.edd.ca.gov
Know your rights as an employee and visit the password protected member section of the CDHA website where a document has been posted regarding these issues.

CalHyPAC is the California Dental Hygienists' Association's Political Action Committee, a separate entity from the CDHA.
The PAC establishes relationships with California legislators who believe that dental hygienists are an important and essential part of the health care system. We support candidates for the California legislature who believe in our interests, concerns, and goals. When CDHA introduces legislation, we need a supportive legislator who will sponsor the bill for us.CalHyPAC is an essential part of CDHA's government affairs program.
Visit the CalHyPac website and a link to their newsletter here.
