Dear Fellow Flight Attendants,
On Wednesday, January 29th, I will be attending the joint Hawaiian-Alaska Master Executive Council (MEC) meeting in San Francisco to elect officers for a merged Hawaiian-Alaska MEC. The MECs are being merged as provided by Section X.E. of the AFA Constitution & Bylaws, and the elected officers will serve a 10-month term that begins on March 1, 2025.
The AFA International Office has been emailing and providing updated information, including an updated list of candidates, to all Hawaiian and Alaska Flight Attendants. Under the AFA Constitution & Bylaws, the Local Council Presidents are the voting members of the MEC, and they will vote to elect the new officers. Hawaiian and Alaska have a total of eight Local Councils (ANC, SEA, PDX, SFO, AS-LAX, HA-LAX, SAN, and HNL). I encourage you to reach out to me if you have something that you would like to share about one or more of the candidates or have questions about the election or MEC merger process.
HNL Local Council Vice President Kela Chong will be attending the joint MEC meeting as well. During our time in office Kela and I have gotten to know a few of the other AFA officers at Alaska Airlines. In a few months I will be engaged with Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement (JCBA) negotiations, and at times Kela will likely need to take my place in MEC meetings.
Finally, it is with great sadness that we remember the untimely passing of our fellow Hawaiian Airlines Flight Attendant, JoAnne Finley. Although JoAnne’s time with us was brief, she left a positive impression on those who knew her and worked with her. If you or a fellow Flight Attendant need someone to talk to, please reach out to one of our EAP committee members who is available to provide you with assistance.
In Solidarity,
Martin
Martin Gusman
President
AFA Hawaiian Council 43
Notes: I regret to inform you that HNL Secretary Allison Sakae-Kauffman has resigned her position. Kela and I wish her all the best. On an unrelated note, I have been notified by the AFA International Office that no signatures were submitted for the petition to recall Kela and me, and the matter is therefore closed.
