Giving MECK Pre-K families the tools to succeed!

Parent-Teacher Conferences

As we wrap up our first trimester, Parent Teacher Conferences are on their way. Conferences provide an opportunity for parents and guardians to connect with the child's teacher and discuss their growth academically, socially, and the overall development and performance of their child in school. During parent teacher conferences, families will be receiving the assessment results from the Brigance screening assessment as well as all the additional assessments they have had during the school year.

Be sure to sign up for your child's conference!

Social-Emotional Development

Children getting sick happens and with sickness and flu season it is important for children to take care of themselves and others. Taking time to explain a few skills will help keep your child and others safe, such as covering when they cough or sneeze, using tissues and washing their hands. Washing their hands can help protect themselves and others from transferring germs. Using visuals for handwashing or a song can help children remember how to wash their hands well.

Here is a story all about handwashing for children.

Transition Between Activities

Does your child struggle transitioning between activities? Check out this article from the National Center for Pyramid Model Innovations on tips to support your child with transitions.

Child Development

Cooking is a great way to develop a variety of skills in preschoolers and strengthens the bond between children and their caregivers.

  1. Cooking using a visual recipe like the one below develops reading skills as children practice moving from left to right and from the top of the page to the bottom of the page.
  2. Cooking helps children develop self-confidence and independence because they feel like they are contributing to household activities.
  3. Cooking develops math skills as children count ingredients (e.g. 2 eggs)
  4. Cooking develops fine motor skills as children scoop, pour, and stir ingredients.
  5. Cooking can also be a sensory activity where students touch a variety of textures (see The Best Banana Bread Muffins Ever {Without Dirtying a Single Dish} for a great, no mess recipe that doubles as a sensory activity).
