Anchorage, AK March 30, 2020: In light of the CDC recommendation to cancel large gatherings, (STAR) Standing Together Against Rape has made the decision to cancel Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® 2020 that was originally scheduled for Saturday, April 25 at the Dimond Center .  We appreciate the enthusiasm and support the community has shown for this event over the past several years, and we anticipate hosting this event again as soon as it is safe to do so.

STAR’s mission is grounded in the concept of providing for safe and healthy communities.  We stand with our local community in doing our part during this pandemic to protect the well-being of people in Anchorage and beyond.  One way that we can achieve this goal is by canceling large gatherings, such as the Walk.

For those who have donated to the Walk, all donations will be put to good use as we continue to provide essential services in our community.  Pledges will be converted to donations, or you can request a refund.  If anyone would like a refund, they are advised to contact Jennifer Brown at [email protected]

Although the Walk has been canceled, the need to take a stand against sexual assault and abuse has not ended. We invite everyone to carry on with a commitment to speak out about violence and engage in ways that they can make a difference in our community during April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

We still intend to hold these “virtual” events:

We would like to thank our donors, participants and volunteers again for their support of the Walk, as well as the Dimond Center for being our venue partner. Thanks also to statewide and local law enforcement, and Alaska Local Iron Workers 751 for their steadfast participation year after year. We are extremely grateful for their efforts and look forward to engaging with all of our supporters when the next Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event is rescheduled.
