Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month connects students with their food through agriculture volunteers

Saskatoon, SK - March 1, 2023 – Food is integral to every person’s life. And whether they realize it or not, each bite is connected to agriculture.
“For more than a decade, Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month has given us an opportunity to celebrate our connections - as Canadians - to agriculture,” said Rebecca Sooksom, chair of Agriculture in the Classroom Canada. “Linking students with food producers helps keep that connection strong so the next generation of Canadians knows not only where their food comes from, but also the importance of the sector to our communities from coast to coast.”
Each AITC member organization offers learning opportunities to students in their respective provinces, including reading challenges, contests, videos, and classroom presentations. Agriculture in the Classroom Saskatchewan (AITC-SK) is once again coordinating classroom visits from volunteer farmers and agriculture industry professionals, as well as distributing a new agriculture resource to teachers.
“We want to create a memorable learning experience for students,” says Sara Shymko, Executive Director of AITC-SK. “Having an agriculture volunteer come into the classroom to answer student questions, bring props, and share their ag story is a truly impactful experience for both the volunteer and students. This year we are incredibly proud to have over 7,500 students connect with 145 volunteers during March!”
Each year for CALM, AITC-SK creates a new educational resource highlighting different aspects of agriculture for teachers to use in their classrooms. This year’s resource explores land stewardship. Through an engaging, hands-on activity, students will compare different modes and methods for food production, deepening their understanding of agriculture and where food comes from.
AITC offers resources and programs year-round, although it takes extra pride during the month of CALM. In 2022, CALM provided more than 137,000 agriculture and food student experiences across the country. CALM is possible thanks to supporting partners Cargill and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Canadian Agricultural Partnership.
