MEM Celebrates Industry Night 2020
Thank you to attendees and sponsors

Industry Night 2020 Helen Sun Mark Werwath students
Industry Night speaker, Stats Perform CTO Dr. Helen Sun (fourth from right) and MEM Director Mark Werwath (far right) celebrate with students and alumni.

Thanks to students, alumni, faculty, and industry partners who attended the sixth annual MEM Industry Night 2020! The event included a networking reception, dinner, and keynote talk by Dr. Helen Sun, CTO at STATS Perform who discussed Artificial Intelligence in Sports: How AI is Changing the Way Sports are Viewed, Understood, and Played.

"AI is hard, there are no playbooks," Sun said. "Have a can-do spirit and take challenges head-on. It will be most fulfilling [when you] achieve something that has never been done before." Read a summary of Dr. Sun's talk on our website.

This year's event continues a history of bringing MEM students together with industry experts to help them learn and connect. "Industry Night is all about the opportunity to network students and working professionals with one another," MEM Director Mark Werwath said. "It's a chance for students to meet with local industry leaders on a face-to-face basis."

MEM Director Welcomes New Finance Professor
Dr. Roland Eisenhuth to take over Financial Issues for Engineers

Arch

Heartfelt thanks go out to Dr. Mohan Rao for his many years of teaching finance for MEM, as he moves on to being fully focused on his business ventures. We are truly happy for Dr. Rao, and are proud of him and his successful businesses. Dr. Rao has agreed to be an occasional guest speaker in the MEM program in the future and as his businesses expand, he plans to continue to hire MEM graduates in the future.

While we say goodbye to Dr. Rao, we would also like to welcome our new addition to the MEM faculty, Dr. Roland Eisenhuth. Dr. Eisenhuth is a colleague of Dr. Rao and has extensive background in economics. Dr. Eisenhuth received his PhD in Economics from Northwestern University and was previously an assistant professor at Oregon State University. He is currently a VP at the American Property Casualty Insurance Association in Chicago and teaches in the Northwestern Master of Science in Project Management (MPM) program, where his courses are very well received.

Please help me to welcome Dr. Roland Eisenhuth to the MEM faculty and MEM family.

Regards,
Mark Werwath

New Healthcare Systems Engineering Concentration Announced for Fall 2020
Plus Design and Innovation becomes Product Management

For several years, MEM students have been able to choose from 3 concentrations: Managerial Analytics, Design & Innovation, and  Project and Process Management. Now, in response to interest from the local healthcare community, they will have a fourth option. MEM will launch a brand new concentration in Healthcare Systems Engineering beginning in Fall 2020. This sequence leverages a specialized course in healthcare systems engineering as well as a new practicum course offered in concert with Lake Forest Hospital and taught by Rebeca Khorzad, an MEM alum and process engineering specialist at LFH. This sequence will require students to take AMPL, R and computer simulations courses.

Also, Design and Innovation has been reformulated as a concentration in Product Management to better reflect the core concepts. While the concentration still leverages the same courses as Design and Innovation, we have expanded the NUvention options. The two foundational courses remain our course in Product Management and our course in Organizational Innovation.

We are excited to adapt and expand the concentration choices for our students and equip them for new demands. Look for more announcements and details on our Concentrations page in the coming weeks.
Spring Quarter Classes to Begin April 4
Quarter will begin with classes being taught remotely.

As winter quarter finals began and cases of COVID-19 started appearing in the Northwestern community, the university administration rapidly changed plans for the spring quarter. Spring Break was extended by one week, with classes resuming remotely April 4, 2020. A decision will be made by April 17 on whether to resume on-campus classes this academic year.

MEM students, faculty, and staff have also had to change plans for the spring. Faculty are adapting the lineup of spring courses to be taught via Zoom, and students are preparing to learn with the help of remote resources. As of this time, MEM offices are closed but staff is working remotely and accessible via email at mem@northwestern.edu for any questions or concerns.

University President Morton Schapiro shared an update on March 20th, commending the kindness and compassion he has seen among students, saying, "It confirms my conviction that not only will we get through this, we will be a stronger and more caring Northwestern community as a result."
MEM Student & Alumni Spotlight
Monthly feature recognizing our amazing students and alumni

Brandon Hsu and Shitong Xiong were still in their first quarter of the MEM program when they earned a unique extracurricular opportunity. The two worked with Schmidt, a manufacturer that provides traditional and laser marking systems to a vast variety of industries, from aerospace to medical devices. They shared a behind-the-scenes look at their project in MEM Students Help 125-Year-Old Company Improve Processes .
