MENA Clean Energy Month in Review

Roundup by the GM
Dear Members and Colleagues

June has been another exciting month for the clean energy sector in MENA.  The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority announced Masdar-led consortium comprising Spanish firms, Fotowatio Renewable Ventures and Gransolar Group won the contract for the 800 MW phase for the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar park.

Saudi Arabia's state electricity utility announced a tender to build two solar-power plants in Al-Jouf and Rafha in the kingdom's northern region which will generate as much as 50MW using PV technology.

Dubai Municipality is constructing one of the largest waste-to-energy plants in the Middle East, a Dh2 billion facility to convert solid waste into energy in Warsan district two, which is expected to begin operations in the second quarter of 2020.

CEBC will host a regional workshop on Waste to Energy in August, followed by an event dedicated to Energy Efficiency in September.  The Global Forum on Project & Infrastructure Finance takes place in October in partnership with Islamic Finance News, and information on all of these events are detailed in the events section below.

With 30 schools and a student population of 65,000 youngsters registered in CEBC's Environment Protection program, we are delighted to present the Student's Year Book for 2016. It gives wonderful insights into the children's activities over the last 12 months and their dedication, commitment and passion in protecting our environment and helping to create a sustainable future.  We hope you enjoy seeing what they have been up to this year!

We look forward to welcoming you at our upcoming events and wish you and your families a wonderful Eid break in July.

Best wishes,

The Power to Change: Solar and Wind Cost Reduction Potential to 2025 | IRENA
With the right policies in place, the cost of electricity from solar and wind power technologies could fall by at least 26% and as much as 59% between 2015 and 2025, finds this cost-analysis report from IRENA. The global weighted average cost of electricity could fall by 26% from onshore wind, by 35% from offshore wind, by at least 37% from concentrating solar power (CSP) technologies, and by 59% from solar photovoltaics (PV) by 2025, the report finds.  [Download Report]

What Happens When Grid Parity Hits?
As solar, wind and storage technologies continue their remorseless - if not breathtaking - decline in cost, grid parity is set to wreak havoc on the century-old utility business model.   Once it becomes economic over the long term to install renewable energy and storage technology without subsidies, uptake will accelerate beyond the control of incumbents and the authorities as the free market takes over. This will have profound implications for electricity markets around the world.  [Download Report]
Solar photovoltaic (PV) deployment has grown at unprecedented rates since the early 2000s. As the global PV market increases, so will the volume of decommissioned PV panels, and large amounts of annual waste are anticipated by the early 2030s. Growing PV panel waste presents a new environmental challenge, but also unprecedented opportunities to create value and pursue new economic avenues.  This report is the first-ever projection of PV panel waste volumes to 2050.  [Download Report]
