A Message from Our Pastor and Teacher
|
First Sunday After Christmas, December 27, 2020 ~ "Searching for the Light" A Dialog with Rev. Sarah Averette Phillips and Rev. Jill Kirchner-Rose
In the Gospel of John, the author proclaims, “The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.” In a Zoom call, Pastors Sarah Averette-Phillips and Jill Kirchner-Rose reflect on the year and question whether the light still shines… especially in 2020. After all, Covid deaths in the U.S. now top 330,000; the whole of creation groans as wild fires rage in the west and hurricanes grow in intensity in the south; and protests erupt as justice is not served. John never lived through 2020! Can John’s words hold meaning even during this year – one of the worst years on record? Join Pastors Sarah and Jill as they search for the light.

Reflection of the week from the RUCC Racial Justice Team
MLB's news release referred to [their decision to add Negro League statistics to baseball's official record] as "correcting an oversight." But the Negro Leagues were not the result of an "oversight," and to frame their exclusion as such is stunningly offensive. It was a deliberate system. The major leagues destroyed a half-century of Black baseball history, and baseball history in general, with one unrelenting purpose in mind: to do their part in reinforcing Black inferiority to the rest of the country.”

Epiphany Cards Arriving in Your Mail Soon -- Wait til January 3 to Open!
|
There is a special tradition at Redlands United Church of Christ. On the first Sunday of the New Year, we receive an Epiphany word to guide, center, maybe comfort, or perhaps challenge us in the year ahead. Since we are unable to meet in person this year, you will receive an Epiphany word in the mail. Please do not open the envelope until we gather for worship on January 3rd at 10:30 a.m. There will be a designated time in the service to open your envelope with the Epiphany word in it.
Epiphany words will be mailed to each member. If you are not a member, but would like to receive an Epiphany word, please contact the church office at (909) 793-3520 or email Nancy (office@redlandsucc.org) and we will mail one to you.
Please note that Pastor Jill did not select the Epiphany word for you. A word was “randomly” placed in the envelope – but, of course, is anything truly random with the Holy Spirit? Happy New Year!

Last Chance for Art, for Heaven's Sake! Silent Auction - Bidding Ends TODAY, December 24!
|
The Art, for Heaven's Sake! show site will remain up for the coming months, however the sales with a percentage going to AFHS are ending. We will begin receiving checks from artists and can offer an accounting within weeks. We appreciate the generosity of those who purchased art through our site.
Special kudos to Sondra Hodson, who made it all happen. Without her we could not have offered our on-line show. We are also grateful to the artists who donated work for the silent auction. All in all, we achieved our goal of presenting a 2020 show and of keeping this wonderful tradition alive in this year of social distancing.

Virtual Winter Camp Has Programs for Everyone
|
The SCNC Outdoor Ministries and Youth and Young Adult Ministries Teams
would like to invite all ages to join our upcoming
Virtual Winter Camp!
Theme: The Mountain Top: "I've Seen The Promised Land"
Join us during MLK weekend as we take a look through the lens of Dr. King and envision what we want our world to look like. In his final speech, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke about the mountaintop and how God led him to see the promised land. During this weekend of virtual camp, we will be grounding ourselves in the ideology that before we can create a better world we first have to envision what it would look like and there is no better place to start than within our own communities.
This year we are opening Winter Wonder Camp to ALL.
This will be an intergenerational weekend retreat for all ages.
The retreat will include 3 days of virtual programming that includes some of your favorite camp activities. We will have workshops for all ages. We will also have family crafts and cooking activities. You will also receive a box for you and your family. The box will include programming material, a winter camp t-shirt, and more Pilgrim Pines swag!
Dates: January 16-18, 2021
Investment:
$110 for first participant
$25 each additional participant
Special note from Pastor Jill: The church will pay half of the registration cost.
