Monday, September 19 - Friday September 23 - BASC Bess Window
Atlanta Public Schools is committed to creating a culture of student support, and supporting the needs of the whole child. One way we are addressing the whole child is by identifying student strengths and areas for growth relative to social, emotional, and behavioral well-being.
In our continuing efforts to support the well-being of all students, we will administer a universal screener of social, emotional & behavioral health. The universal screener that was chosen by the District to help identify student strengths and areas for growth is the BASC-3 Behavior and Emotional Screening Scale (BASC-3 BESS).

Morningside Safety & Security Update
Our area of the city, Midtown, has had two instances of safety and security concerns this week, including Monday’s tragic events and again today at Midtown High School with a social media threat of violence.
Please be assured that we work within our school and within the larger community to keep our students and staff safe each day. At Morningside, we are prepared and not scared, though there have been two instances this week that remind us of the importance of safety drills, emergency planning and being ready to act swiftly when needed. We will remain vigilant and continue to implement our safety and security measures each day for our kids, our staff and our entire school.

APS/Morningside Attendance Policy
Our school Social Worker will soon begin sending out attendance letters for students that have 3+ unexcused absences. These letters are designed to share the protocols of Atlanta Public Schools and the State of Georgia as it pertains to attendance.
Please note that our Social Worker extends school-level interventions prior to referring an Attendance Matter to Juvenile Court. The staff at MES will do all they can to remove barriers that prevent students from attending school on time every day. The attendance letters are meant to be informational and to serve as an intervention to prevent ongoing attendance concerns.
Should your student receive a letter and the absences are excused, please let the school know. Please be advised that all notes for excused absences should be submitted to [email protected] and any notes submitted after 3 days of the students' return cannot be accepted.
Please refer to the attendance Policy HERE to determine what is excused and unexcused (consult pages 15-16).
In no way are these letters meant to be threatening or offensive; however, they are meant to educate and provide guidance if a student continues to show a pattern of absences.
The school will work with each student on a case-by-case basis to determine the best level of intervention. Thank you for your support and cooperation in ensuring students are reporting on time and present every day.
